Abstract: A base station that is configured to provide first-RAT service on multiple carriers will reserve at least one of the carriers for use in providing UEs with dual-connectivity service on the first RAT and a second RAT, and the base station will reserve at least one other of the carriers for use in providing UEs with standalone first-RAT service. For instance, a 4G base station that is configured to provide 4G service on multiple 4G carriers could reserve at least one of those 4G carriers for use in providing UEs with EN-DC service (where each UE would be served concurrently on a 5G carrier as well) and could reserve another one of those 4G carriers for use in providing UEs with standalone 4G service.

Abstract: A mechanism to control power consumption by a base station, such as a base station that implements an antenna array, such as a massive-MIMO antenna array. A computing system detects operation by the base station in a low-usage state and operation by a collated base station in a low-usage state. In response, the computing system then causes reconfiguration of a proper subset of antenna structures of the antenna array from an enabled state to a disabled state, while keeping a remainder of the antenna structures of the antenna array in the enabled state.

Abstract: A method and system for controlling application of MU-MIMO. The disclosure provides for considering a device's block error rate (BLER) as a basis to decide whether to provide the device with MU-MIMO service. For instance, a base station could determine which of the base station's served devices each have threshold low BLER. And on at least that basis, the base station could select each such device to receive MU-MIMO service. Or faced with a choice between devices to receive MU-MIMO service, the base station could compare the devices' levels of BLER and could select the devices that have lower BLER to receive MU-MIMO service.

Abstract: An exemplary method involves a user equipment (UE) receiving a communication-origination request to initiate a communication with a given counterpart. In response, the UE: (a) uses historical communication data for one or more previous communications as a basis for evaluating whether the UE is likely to be assigned a particular codec, from a plurality of possible codecs, for communication with the given counterpart; (b) based on results of the evaluation, determines a respective setting for each of one or more access parameters affecting a likelihood of successfully establishing the communication with the given counterpart; and (c) performs the communication-origination process according to the determined settings for the one or more access parameters, to initiate the requested communication with the given counterpart.

Abstract: A method and system for controlling service of user equipment devices (UEs) by a base station in a wireless communication system. In an example arrangement, the base station detects that uplink noise on its air interface is threshold high and that multiple UEs being served by the base station are threshold distant from the base station. In response to detecting this combination of factors, the base selects at least one of the threshold distant UEs for the base station to stop serving, with the selection being based on the UE having highest uplink transmission power among the multiple served UEs that are threshold distant from the base station, and the base station then causes handover of the selected UE from the base station.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method and system for controlling base station buffering of data. In an example method, the base station serves a wireless communication device (WCD) over an air interface, where the air interface encompasses a quantity of channels on which the base station serves the WCD, where the base station is configured to buffer, in a data buffer, data awaiting transmission to the WCD, where the buffer has a fullness-threshold defining a maximum quantity of data that the base station will buffer for the WCD, and where the base station is configured to respond to the quantity of data in the buffer meeting the fullness-threshold by increasing the quantity of channels. Then, while serving the WCD, the base station determines an extent to which the WCD provides connectivity between at least one other device and the base station, and sets and applies the fullness-threshold based on the extent.

Abstract: Method and systems for assigning resources to user equipment devices (UEs) from a base station are disclosed. In accordance with the disclosure, the base station operates in a first mode in which the base station gives a UE a first scheduling priority level for resource assignment from the base station. The base station then makes a determination that a packet drop rate for the UE exceeds a threshold packet drop rate. Based on the determination, the base station switches from operating in the first mode to operating in a second mode in which the base station gives the UE a second scheduling priority level for resource assignment from the base station, where the second scheduling priority level is higher than the first scheduling priority level.

Or the method could apply where the UE is not yet being served by the relay base station, in which case the question could be whether the UE should initially attach with or hand over to the relay base station. Further, the method could be carried out by the UE and/or by a base station or other network entity.
