Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure provide for beam management in wireless communication systems. In some examples, beam angle information (e.g., angles of arrival/departure) may be utilized to select one or more serving downlink beams for communication between a scheduling entity and a scheduled entity. The beam angle information may further be utilized to facilitate additional operations within a backhaul network, such as wireless node locating, obstacle locating, system mapping within the network topology, beam determination and beam sweeping configuration, and mobility management among wireless nodes of a backhaul network. In other examples, aperiodic uplink beam measurements may be triggered based on downlink beam measurement reports and/or in response to a request from a scheduled entity. The scheduling entity may then jointly select uplink and downlink beams based on both the received downlink beam measurement report and uplink beam measurements.

Abstract: Certain aspects of the present disclosure relate to methods and apparatus for multiplexing new radio (NR) synchronization signals and paging signals. A Base Station (BS) decides whether or not to multiplex paging and synchronization signals in a set of time resources, a set of frequency resources or a combination thereof, the deciding based on at least one of a capability of the BS, a capability of at least one User Equipment (UE) served by the BS, an operating frequency band or a combination of tone spacings of the paging signals and the synchronization signals.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described that provide for signaling and switching of beam pair links (BPLs) for directional transmission beams between a base station and a user equipment (UE). A threshold value may be determined, which corresponds to an amount of time for a UE to receive and decode control information, and apply a different BPL than a current BPL that that is in use. The UE may maintain a BPL for data, which is used during data transmission time intervals (TTIs) until an indication is received to change the BPL for data. The UE and the base station may determine to change between BPLs based at least in part on the threshold value and a scheduling offset between a control channel transmission that allocates resources for a data TTI and a start of the data TTI.

Abstract: Certain aspects of the present disclosure provide techniques for use of SS transmitted using a UE-specific configuration of time-frequency resources. A BS may assign at least one UE-specific configuration, wherein the UE-specific configuration comprises an allocation of resources for a UE-specific SS for mobility management purposes. The BS may communicate with the UE based, at least in part, on the UE-specific configuration. A UE may correspondingly receive the UE-specific configuration and communicate with a BS based, at least in part, on the configuration.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for updating beam-based communications are described. A base station may configure a user equipment (UE) with a set of beam management configurations, which may be used to modify (e.g., dynamically or periodically) beam-based communications. For example, the base station may indicate a beam configuration for utilization by the UE and the UE may switch to the indicated beam configuration or update a currently used beam configuration based on the indication. In another example, a set of beam configurations may be sequentially ordered, and the base station may indicate to the UE to use the next beam configuration in the sequence of beam configurations. The update to the beam configuration may be triggered based on a distance change (e.g., UE and base station getting closer or farther apart) or a reference signal measurement between the UE and the base station, among other factors.

The base station may indicate, to the UE, the tone spacing scheme in a control channel, a synchronization signal, or a reference signal and the tone spacing scheme may be selected by the base station from available tone spacing schemes for communication. Tone spacing schemes may also be referred to as numerologies.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure relate to a method of operating a scheduled entity for wireless communication with a network. In some aspects, the scheduled entity transmits a message that requests a scheduling entity to transmit at least one reference signal. The scheduled entity obtains channel state information based on the at least one reference signal. The scheduled entity transmits a report that includes the channel state information. In other aspects, the scheduled entity transmits a message that requests a scheduling entity to schedule a reference signal transmission for the scheduled entity. The scheduled entity obtains an assignment of resources for transmission of the reference signal in response to the message. The scheduled entity transmits the reference signal based on the assignment of resources. Other aspects, embodiments, and features are also claimed and described.

Abstract: A mechanism is proposed to reduce overhead at the expense of increasing latency for UEs with weak link gain, while the latency for most UEs may remain the same. In one aspect of this disclosure, a UE may determine the number of attempts for transmitting a RACH signal based on one or more of path loss, the transmit power of the UE, the beam correspondence at the UE, or the power of signals received during the synchronization subframe. The UE may transmit the RACH signal in the determined number of attempts. In another aspect of the disclosure, a base station may combine signals of one or more RACH attempts to decode a RACH signal. The base station may inform a UE regarding the number of RACH subframes that the base station uses for decoding the RACH signal through a random access response message.

Abstract: A UE may select a first beam for communication with a base station. The UE may attempt, through the selected first beam, at least one RACH procedure with the base station. The UE may determine that the at least one RACH procedure failed with the base station. The UE may send, after a successful RACH procedure with the base station, information indicating that the at least one RACH procedure failed. In an aspect, the UE may select a new beam for communication with the base station after the determination that the at least one RACH procedure failed, and at least a portion of the successful RACH procedure may be performed through the selected new beam.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. In aspects of the present disclosure, a user equipment (UE) may report metrics (e.g., received signal power, beam identifier) about synchronization signal (SS) beams using the same (e.g., or a similar) framework that is used for channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) reporting. Because SSs are intended to be broadcast across a wide coverage area in a beamformed manner, the SSs represent a promising complement to existing beam management techniques. Accordingly, beam management may be achieved at least in part based on reporting one or more metrics of beamformed SSs through a channel feedback framework.
