Abstract: Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, a system that can transmit first wireless signals associated with communication signals, where the first wireless signals are directed via beam steering by an antenna array towards a wireless receiver. The system can transmit second wireless signals associated with the communication signals, where the second wireless signals are directed via the beam steering by the antenna array towards a transmission medium. The second wireless signals can induce electromagnetic waves at a physical interface of the transmission medium where the electromagnetic waves are associated with the communication signals. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Abstract: Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, generating, by a first hollow waveguide coupled to a first dielectric coupler, a first electromagnetic wave that couples onto a transmission medium, generating, by a second hollow waveguide coupled to a second dielectric coupler, a second electromagnetic wave that couples onto the transmission medium, combining the first electromagnetic wave and the second electromagnetic wave combine to form a combined electromagnetic wave that propagates along the transmission medium without requiring an electrical return path, and adjusting a first phase of the first electromagnetic wave, a second phase of the second electromagnetic wave, or both to adjust a wave mode of the combined electromagnetic wave. Other embodiments are disclosed.

A reflective plate is spaced a distance behind the antenna relative to a direction of the propagation of the second electromagnetic wave. Other embodiments are disclosed.

A magnetic coupler magnetically couples the radio frequency signal to a transmission medium as a guided electromagnetic wave that is bound by an outer surface of the transmission medium. A cap includes a dielectric portion that secures the transmission medium adjacent to the magnetic coupler and a reflective plate that reduces electromagnetic emissions from the magnetic coupler. Image processing is applied to the target image, and a particular physical feature is identified as a candidate deployment site based on the applying of the image processing, wherein the candidate deployment site is configured to accommodate equipment of a distributed communication network that facilitates transmission of electromagnetic waves along a surface of a transmission medium. Abstract: Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, an antenna system that includes a selector and a dielectric antenna array. The selector is coupled to a number of dielectric cores and selectively launches electromagnetic waves on a selected dielectric core of the dielectric cores. The selected dielectric core corresponds to one of the dielectric cores, and the electromagnetic waves propagate along the selected dielectric core without requiring an electrical return path. The dielectric antenna array is coupled to the dielectric cores and includes a number of dielectric antennas, wherein a dielectric antenna of the dielectric antennas transmits, in response to the electromagnetic waves received from the selected dielectric core, a controllable beam. Other embodiments are disclosed.
