    Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user equipment (UE) may receive, for a base station, a configuration message indicating a set of random access resources associated with monitoring by a relay node. The UE may transmit a random access message using the random access resources to the relay node and a timing advance associated with uplink data transmissions by the UE. The UE may then communicate with the base station via the relay node based on the random access message. In some examples, a UE may monitor for a relay reference signal from a relay node. The UE may determine a signal strength and a timing of the relay reference signal. The UE may determine whether an RSRP satisfies a threshold receive power, and may determine whether the timing of the relay reference signal is less than a timing threshold. The UE may transmit a downlink relay request to the base station to initiate relay communications.

    Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. The described techniques may provide for efficiently triggering a handover at a user equipment (UE) from a source cell to a target cell. The UE may receive, at a first time period, a first control message including a configuration of a target cell to use at a second time period for performing a handover procedure from a source cell to a target cell. The UE may then receive, at the second time period, a second control message triggering the UE to perform the handover procedure from the source cell to the target cell. The UE may use the configuration of the target cell received in the first control message to perform a handover procedure from the source cell to the target cell at the second time period in response to receiving the second control message.

    Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described in which UEs may communicate with satellites and base stations or gateways in a non-terrestrial network (NTN). Due to the large distances between transmitting devices and receiving devices in a NTN, timing adjustments to account for propagation delay communications links via a satellite may include a propagation delay between a UE and a satellite, a propagation delay between a base station and a satellite, as well as a variation in the propagation delays due to movement of the satellite. In accordance with various techniques discussed herein, a UE may account for variation in propagation delay, in addition to determined propagation delay, when determining an uplink timing for uplink communications via a satellite.
