Abstract: Certain aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to downlink (DL) based and uplink (UL) based positioning reference signal (PRS) techniques that may help facilitate positioning procedures in systems deploying narrowband devices, such as narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) devices. An exemplary method that may be performed by a node includes monitoring for positioning reference signals (PRS) transmitted from one or more base stations within a narrowband region of a wider system bandwidth, wherein tones of the PRS are repeated across at least one of multiple symbols within a same subframe, or multiple consecutive subframes, and estimating timing from the one or more base stations based on the PRS.

Abstract: In order to maintain flexible system bandwidth and a flexible center frequency, without requiring a cyclic prefix or guard interval, a transmitter apparatus transmits a reference signal based on a single carrier waveform having a mixed symbol structure, in reference signal symbols using at least one of a cyclic prefix and a guard interval and transmits data based on the single carrier waveform without the cyclic prefix or the guard interval. The data may be based on input data processed using overlapping FFT windows, and an amount of overlap between the FFT windows may be configurable by the transmitter or the receiver. An apparatus receiving the downlink transmission comprising data based on a single carrier waveform may process the data based on overlapping FFT windows.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described in which different spreading sequences may be used to distinguish concurrent non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) transmissions. The spreading sequences may be selected based on one or more codebooks configured at a user equipment (UE) and a codebook for an uplink NOMA transmission determined based on a set of common resources allocated for the uplink NOMA transmission and a number of expected transmitters in a transmitter group. The UE may identify data to transmit in the uplink NOMA transmission, apply the spreading sequence to the data, and transmit the spread data in the uplink NOMA transmission. A base station may receive multiple concurrent uplink NOMA transmissions, perform receive signal processing to identify spreading signals and UE identity, de-spread the signals based on different spreading sequences, and demodulate and decode the de-spread signals of the NOMA UE.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A wireless device may use a sampling rate that is less than a default sampling rate associated with a wireless carrier. The device may operate in a narrowband portion of a system bandwidth, and the sampling rate may be less than that used by devices monitoring the whole bandwidth. Multiple sampling rates may be used so that a portion of signal processing may be associated with one sampling rate and another portion of the signal processing may be associated with another sampling rate. The size of a cyclic prefix (CP) may be adjusted based on the sampling rate to align subframe timing boundaries for signals of different sampling rates. In some cases, each symbol of a signal may include both a CP and a postfix such that the postfix for each symbol overlaps the prefix of the next symbol.

Abstract: Subband based uplink access for new radio (NR) shared spectrum (NR-SS) is disclosed. A base station performs a listen before talk (LBT) procedure on system allocated subbands of a shared communication channel. The base station determines a first set of candidate subbands that are signaled to a user equipment (UE). The UE performs an LBT procedure on the first set to identify a second set of candidate subbands including the successful LBT subbands of the first set. Aspects of the disclosure provide for managing and refining the subbands for transmissions. A first aspect provides the UE to determine a transmission behavior based on mismatch between the first and second sets. A second aspect provides the first and second sets in handshaking between the base station and UE for refining the eventual transmission set of subbands. A third aspect provides cross-band LBT reporting for further refining subband selection in later slots.

Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure provide techniques for design of synchronization signals for narrowband operation, which can be used for stand-alone/in-band/guard-band deployment. An example method is provided for operations which may be performed by a base station (BS). The example method generally includes generating a primary synchronization signal (PSS) utilizing a first code sequence and a cover code applied to the first code sequence over a first number of symbols within one or more subframes, generating a secondary synchronization signal (SSS) based on a second code sequence over a second number of symbols within one or more subframes, and transmitting the PSS and the SSS in the first and second subframes to a first type of a user equipment (UE) that communicates on one or more narrowband regions of wider system bandwidth.

Abstract: In order to address the needs of narrow band communication, eNB-based processing and/or UE-based processing is provided to achieve robust detection of cell ID and SFN timing location using NB-SSS. A base station constructs a NB-SSS signal using a root index of a Zadoff-Chu (ZC) sequence, a scrambling code, a cyclic shift or phase ramping sequence, and an interleaving sequence, wherein a combination of the ZC root index, the scrambling code index, the cyclic shift or phase ramping sequence index, and the interleaving sequence index signals information for a cell identifier (e.g., PCID) and frame timing. The ZC sequence used may be a long ZC sequence constructed to span a total number of tones allocated to an SSS sequence or may be a concatenation of multiple ZC sequences, wherein the concatenated ZC sequences span a total number of tones allocated to an SSS sequence.

Abstract: Random access techniques may use subcarriers allocated for random access requests in narrowband communication. Physical resources may be selected for transmission of a random access request based on a “coverage class” of a user equipment (UE). In some examples, a set of coverage classes may be identified based on one or more UE channel conditions, such as pathloss. Each coverage class may have one or more associated subcarriers of a set of subcarriers in a narrowband bandwidth, and random access messages may be transmitted using the associated subcarrier(s) for the coverage class of a UE. In some examples, different coverage classes may have different numbers of redundant transmissions of a random access message, which may be based on channel conditions associated with a particular coverage class. A UE, based on a measured channel condition, may determine a coverage class and select a subcarrier based on the determined coverage class.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices are described for wireless communication at a device. A device may distinguish a preamble sent from a device configured for a first RAT (e.g., WLAN, Wi-Fi, etc.) from a preamble sent from a device configured for a second RAT (e.g., LTE, LTE-A, LTE-U, etc.). A wireless device associated with a second RAT may transmit a dual-use preamble over a contention-based frequency channel. The dual-use preamble may function as a valid preamble for a first RAT and may be received and decoded by devices associated with the first RAT in addition to devices associated with the second RAT. The dual-use preamble may also include a signature associated with the second RAT. The signature may be embedded with the preamble such that it minimizes interference with the valid preamble and be detected by devices associated with the second RAT.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A base station may broadcast a synchronization signal using a narrowband portion of a bandwidth of a cell. The synchronization signal may include a sequence repeated over several symbol periods using a cover code to support power-efficient cell acquisition. A user equipment (UE) receiving the synchronization signal may determine frequency and timing information for a cell by performing a weighted combination and accumulation of low complexity autocorrelation and cross-correlation procedures on the synchronization signal. The reduced complexity correlation procedures may be enabled based on the use of the cover code and a base sequence. In some cases, the cross-correlation may be performed at multiple sampling rates. The use of the cover code within the synchronization signal may also support correlation procedures that use recursive or repeated updates, which may allow for further reduced computational complexity relative to other cell search procedures.
