The invention provides a method of progressive engagement of all-wheel drive for a mobile vehicle. A set of vehicle parameters is sensed, and an all-wheel drive lock value is determined based on the sensed set of vehicle parameters. Vehicle subsystem control activation is determined, and the all-wheel drive lock value is adjusted based on the vehicle subsystem control activation determination. An all-wheel drive controller is engaged based on the adjusted all-wheel drive lock value.

A spacer for separating a brake booster from a wall comprises a support and a boot. The support is disposed between the booster and the wall, and has a breather port. The boot is integral with the support, and has a generally conical shape tapering from the wall toward a push rod of the booster.

A lightweight spacer for mounting a vacuum brake booster on a panel provides integral flexible sealing lips to seal the interfaces between the panel, spacer, and booster. Integral retaining tabs are provided for holding the spacer in place on the booster during shipping and installation of the booster. Tubular inserts within the spacer are retained and cushioned against rattling by a thin web of material extending over the end of the insert.

The subject invention includes a composite material comprising a ferroelectric material and a ferromagnetic material having a loss factor (tan null) for the composite material which includes a dielectric loss factor of the ferroelectric material and a magnetic loss factor of the ferromagnetic material. The composite material achieves the loss factor of from 0 to about 1.0 for a predetermined frequency range greater than 1 MHz. The ferroelectric material has a dielectric loss factor of from 0 to about 0.5 and the ferromagnetic material has a magnetic loss factor of from 0 to about 0.5 for the predetermined frequency range. The ferroelectric material is present in an amount from 10 to 90 parts by volume based on 100 parts by volume of the composite material and the ferromagnetic material is present in an amount from 10 to 90 parts by volume based upon 100 parts by volume of the composite material such that the amount of the ferroelectric material and the ferromagnetic material equals 100 parts by volume.

An apparatus and method are provided for monitoring the wear of brake linings in a disc brake assembly having a caliper mounted in a floating manner on a mounting bracket, by determining a relative distance between the caliper and bracket. Determining the relative distance may be accomplished by attaching a first housing to the mounting bracket, and attaching a second housing to the caliper, with the first and second housings each including a bore facing one another, and aligning the bores with respect to one another along a common translational axis. A plunger inserted in the bores moves along the translational axis within the bores in proportion to lining wear, and the remaining lining thickness is monitored by determining a position of the plunger along the translational axis within the bores. The position of the plunger in the bores may be used for initiating a change in electrical state of an electrical circuit indicative of the relative axial distance of the caliper from the bracket.

A power system including a cable drive for adjusting a steering column of an automotive vehicle in response to rotation of a jack screw. A cable transmits torque from a motor-driven output shaft to the jack screw. The cable has terminal portions received in sockets in the output shaft and in the jack screw. The terminal portions and the sockets are square in cross section. An end part of each terminal portion is twisted to cause corners of the terminal portion to interfere with comers of the socket into which it extends to provide substantially a lash-free connection between the terminal portions of the cable and the sockets.

A system for steering the wheels of a vehicle. The system includes a steering gear provided with a steering rack reciprocable in a power cylinder. A steering shaft has a pinion meshing with the steering rack. A hydraulic fluid system assists the reciprocation of the steering rack. The hydraulic fluid system includes a power piston reciprocable in the power cylinder. A control valve directs hydraulic fluid from a pump to the power cylinder at one side or the other of the piston, depending on the direction of rotation of the steering shaft. A lock valve is operable when closed to lock the rack against reciprocation to prevent steering of the wheels by preventing fluid flow in the hydraulic fluid system. The lock valve is controlled by a solenoid-operated electronic controller.

A voltage regulating control system for vehicle systems which includes a power supply providing electrical power to the system and having a predefined maximum voltage. A controller controls an actuator performing a vehicle system function and the electrical load in the system wherein the controller has a first predefined minimum operating voltage. A voltage regulator communicates with the controller and the power supply and senses a system input voltage in the system. In response to a sensed voltage dip in excess of a predetermined value, the regulator changes an effective electrical impedance of the system to maintain the system voltage at a predefined minimum voltage greater than the first predefined minimum operating voltage required by the controller.

A pneumatic brake booster includes a generally cylindrical shaped piston. The piston has a first piston end and a second piston end and defines a chamber at the first piston end and a piston bore at the second piston end separated by an air flow aperture. The piston bore includes a plunger aperture located at the second piston end. A plunger includes a first plunger end and a second plunger end and is movable between first and second positions. The second plunger end is located within the plunger aperture. An air valve has a first valve end and a valve second end and is movable between first and second positions and defines a valve bore for receiving the first plunger end. A collapsing spring is located within the valve bore and is adapted to couple the plunger and the air valve. The plunger and air valve are spaced apart a first relative distance in response to the pneumatic brake booster being in a regular apply mode and spaced apart a second relative distance in response to the pneumatic brake booster being in a panic apply mode.

A wobble joint particularly useful for supporting a wash plate in a wash basket of an automatic washing appliance includes inner and outer races formed with mating part-spherical surfaces having common centers of curvature about a longitudinal axis of the joint. Anti-rotation structure acts between the inner and outer races to prevent relative rotation of the races about the longitudinal axis, and cooperates with the part-spherical surfaces to restrict the races to two degrees of tilting movement about respective tilt axes disposed perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and to one another, such that one of the races is thereby supported for wobbling movement relative to the other of the races. In a washing appliance application, the wash plate is fixed to the outer race and wobbles relative to the inner race.
