Abstract: The disclosure describes design of a synchronization signal (SS) block for an unlicensed carrier, and listen before talk (LBT) strategies for initial access. An apparatus of a radio access network (RAN) is disclosed. The apparatus includes baseband circuitry that includes one or more processors and a radio frequency (RF) interface. The one or more processors are to generate, for user equipment (UE) operating on a licensed assisted access (LAA) secondary cell (SCell), a data sequence associated with an SS block. The SS block includes a primary synchronization signal (PSS) and a secondary synchronization signal (SSS), but does not include a physical broadcast channel (PBCH). The RF interface is to receive the data sequence from the one or more processors.

Abstract: Systems and methods of beam reporting for multiple DL processes are described. A UE receives a beam management processes configuration that provides information about beam management reference signals for beam management procedures. The UE transmits a UE capability report that indicates beam management capabilities of the UE and, later, an indication of whether the UE intends to engage in beam refinement. The UE measures the beam management reference signals and receives a beam reporting message that indicates at least one of the beam management procedures to report. In response, the UE transmits the beam report. The beam report contains beam management reference signal measurements of the beam management procedures indicated by the beam reporting message.

Abstract: Embodiments of an Evolved Node-B (eNB), User Equipment (UE) and methods for directional communication are generally described herein. The eNB may transmit, during a downlink sub-frame, a first beam refinement training signal and an uplink scheduling block to a first UE according to a downlink transmission direction from the eNB to the first UE. The eNB 104 may further transmit, during the downlink sub-frame, a second beam refinement training signal and a downlink scheduling block to a second UE according to a downlink transmission direction from the eNB to the second UE. The uplink scheduling block may indicate scheduled uplink resources for a scheduled uplink transmission by the first UE and the downlink scheduling block may indicate scheduled downlink resources for a scheduled downlink transmission to the second UE.

Abstract: Technology for a user equipment (UE) operable to perform reference signal received power (RSRP) measurements in an enhanced Machine Type Communication in an unlicensed spectrum (eMTC-U) system is disclosed. The UE can decode a presence-detection reference signal (PD-RS) received on one or more data channels from a Next Generation NodeB (gNB) in the eMTC-U system. The UE can perform an RSRP measurement using the PD-RS received on the one or more data channels from the gNB. The RSRP measurement can be performed over a selected measurement period and a selected measurement frequency bandwidth.

Abstract: Devices for and methods of beam refinement using a beam refinement reference signal (BRRS) are generally described. A UE receives BRRS information indicating a BRRS position of at least one OFDM symbol in a first or last symbol pair in a subframe. The BRRS replaces the xPDCCH, the last two symbols of data (an xPDSCH or xPUSCH), or is TDMed with a GP. The data and BRRS are allocated to the UE or to different UEs. The BRRS information is provided via an indicator in the DCI or higher layer signaling. The UE refines either the current Rx beam or directly refines a candidate Rx beam and uses one or multiple symbols, as indicated by a BRRS format.

The eNB may receive, from a UE, uplink control information (UCI) that indicates a hybrid automatic repeat request identifier (HARQ ID) for a grant-less uplink (GUL) transmission by the UE during a first sub-frame. The eNB may select, from candidate HARQ IDs, a HARQ ID for a scheduled uplink (SUL) transmission by another UE in a second sub-frame after the first sub-frame. The eNB may, if the GUL transmission is successfully decoded, include the HARQ ID for the GUL transmission in the candidate HARQ IDs for the GUL transmission. The eNB may, if the GUL transmission is not successfully decoded, exclude the HARQ ID for the GUL transmission from the candidate HARQ IDs for the GUL transmission.

Abstract: Embodiments of a user equipment (UE) and method for resource allocation and device-to-device (D2D) discovery hopping are generally described herein. In some embodiments, the UE may receive signaling from an enhanced node B (eNB) indicating discovery resources to transmit discovery signals on within an LTE operation zone. The discovery resources may include a discovery zone which may comprise a plurality of physical resource blocks (PRBs) and a plurality of subframes. The UE may transmit a discovery signal for receipt by one or more other UEs for D2D discovery within some of the PRBs of the discovery zone. The PRBs for the transmission of the discovery signal may be determined in accordance with a hopping mode to provide increased frequency diversity within a bandwidth of the discovery zone. The hopping mode may comprise intra-subframe hopping, inter-subframe hopping or joint intra/inter-subframe hopping.

Abstract: An apparatus for use in an eNB, the apparatus includes circuitry to generate an assignment of one or more interlaces to a UE within a cell managed by the eNB, where the one or more interlaces are selected from a total number of interlaces, and an interlace of the total number of interlaces may include multiple resource blocks spanning within a system bandwidth. The circuitry included in the apparatus is further to encode the assignment by a bit string including one or more bits, which may be a bitmap or an encoding bit string. The circuitry included in the apparatus is further to transmit the bit string to the UE. Other embodiments may also be described and claimed.

Abstract: User Equipment (UE) and base station (eNB) apparatus and methodology for adjusting receive beamforming. A beam refinement reference signal (BRRS) is transmitted with the same transmit beam direction on which data is to be transmitted. While receiving the BRRS, the receiver varies its receive beam direction and measures a signal characteristic of reception of the BRRS to determine a refined receive beam direction. The refined receive beam direction is used to receive the data.
