Abstract: A botanical seed starter assembly for ornamental flowers in which the dormant seeds for a given type of flower or an assortment thereof are dispersed in a matrix of inert particulates in a small box having a removable seal. Printed on the box is a picture of the flower or the assortment thereof to be derived from the seeds. The particulates in the matrix include particles formed of absorbent material which are impregnated with a perfume whose fragrance corresponds to the natural fragrance of the flowers to be grown. When the seal is removed and the matrix is watered, the seeds therein will in due course proceed to sprout. In the more or less prolonged period during which germination is in progress and no sprouts are yet visible, the user during this period will not only experience the fragrance of the perfume, but will relate this fragrance to the flower picture associated therewith, and not have to wait for the flowers to come into being to enjoy them.

Abstract: A compact unit adapted to remove particulate contaminants from the atmosphere of a room and at the same time to render the atmosphere more pleasing. The unit is provided with a casing that includes a cylindrical flow tube through which the air to be purified is drawn by means of a suction fan at the outlet end of the tube. Attachable to the inlet end of the tube is a series of inter-coupled filter rings which are progressively graded to remove more or less coarse particles. The last filter ring in the series is constituted by a porous disc impregnated with a volatile aromatic liquid which is volatilized by the forced air stream to impart a fragrance thereto. Intermediate the inlet and outlet of the tube is an electrostatic precipitator constituted by a negatively-charged ionizer electrode and a positively-charged tubular collector which act to extract residual fine particles from the air stream, whereby the air returned to the atmosphere from the outlet is substantially free of contaminants and is fragrant.

Abstract: An adhesive sports tape windable about the handle of a sports appliance such as a tennis racquet to create a sheath thereabout which acts not only to enhance the grip of the handle but also as pneumatic cushioning minimizing the transmission of shock forces from the handle to the hand of the player. The tape is formed by a flexible band having an open-cell foam plastic core and opposing, gas-impermeable facing skins. The inner skin is coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer to adhere the tape to the handle. The outer skin of the tape when the sheath is formed, is engaged by the hand of the player. The gas filling the cells of the core is entrapped within the tape by the skins, whereby when the tape-formed sheath is manually compressed by the player, it seeks to rebound to its original shape, thereby providing a pneumatic cushioning action. The surface of the skins is irregular, thereby enhancing the grip characteristics of the sheath.

Abstract: A game in which play elements are immersed in liquid within a transparent cell contained in a cartridge insertable in an optical viewer or projector. Abstract: A wall fixture assembly for adhesively mounting an object onto a wall. Though capable of carrying relatively heavy loads, the assembly is readily removable from the wall without impairing the surface thereof. It is constituted by a base sheet and a fixture having a flat foot, the base sheet having an underface coated with a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive whereby the sheet may be pressed against the wall at a desired site and conformed thereto. The flat foot of the fixture whose area is much smaller than that of the sheet is covered with a layer of high-strength adhesive. In installing the assembly, first the sheet is adhered to the wall and conformed thereto, and then the foot of the fixture is pressed against the sheet at the center zone thereof and firmly adhered thereto. A heavy load thereafter imposed on the fixture will not dislodge it from the wall, in that the base sheet interposed between the fixture and the wall acts as a load distributor therefor. The fixture is further provided with an array of outriggers whose extremities engage the outer face of the base sheet at points displaced from the foot to resist bending moments, further enhancing the load-bearing characteristics of the assembly. To remove the installation, one simply peels the sheet from the wall.

Abstract: A push-pull isokinetic exerciser composed of inner and outer telescoping tubes whose ends have handle pieces attached thereto. The inner tube defines an oil-filled chamber which encloses a piston whose actuating rod is attached to the handle end of the outer tube. The piston divides the chamber into right and left sections provided with valves that function alternately to allow oil to pass from the right section to the left section when the tubes are brought together by the handle pieces in a compression stroke, and that allow oil to pass from the left section to the right section when the tubes are pulled apart in an expansion stroke. The motion in the compression and expansion strokes is linear and affords uniform resistance to motion throughout the entire length of each stroke, so that the exercising effect is even and free of strain. Each handle piece is constituted by a cap which covers and protects the end of the tube to which it is attached, a U-shaped yoke secured to the base of the cap and having arms projecting therefrom and a handle bridging the arms, the handle having a longitudinal bore therein to receive the mid-section of a crossbar, whereby the user may engage the handle piece with either hand or foot, or may engage the ends of the crossbar protruding from the handle with both hands or both feet.

Abstract: An electronic physical trainer system which produces periodic tone signals at an adjustable rate to establish an exercise rhythm and which senses the calisthenic activity of a performer in response to this rhythm to evaluate and improve his performance. The trainer system includes a position sensor in the form of a light beam directed toward a photodetector in a path traversing an exercise area to produce action pulses which reflect the movement of the performer as he alternately blocks and clears the beam path. Also included in the system is a pulse generator whose frequency is adjustable to produce exercise pulses which activate a tone generator whose output is amplified and reproduced to provide the tone signals. The exercise pulses and the action pulses are compared in a coincidence network which yields a "hit" pulse each time an action pulse overlaps an exercise pulse to a degree exceeding a set value and which otherwise yields a "miss" pulse. The hit and miss pulses are separately counted and displayed to score the performance.

Abstract: An underwater thermal energy conversion unit adapted to exploit the temperature differential between the surface temperature and the water temperature at the depth of submersion to generate useful power. The unit includes a cylinder divided by a piston assembly into a variable-temperature (VT) air-filled chamber and a constant-temperature (CT) air-filled chamber, both chambers being in heat exchange relationship with the relatively cold water at the depth of the submerged cylinder. The air in the CT chamber is always at the cold water temperature, whereas the air in the VT chamber communicates through a thermally-insulated duct with ambient air above the water body, so that when a control valve is open, the air temperature within the VT chamber rises above the cold water temperature, and when the valve is thereafter closed to isolate the VT chamber from ambient air, the air temperature therein falls again to the cold water temperature. A sensing system causes the valve to open when the temperatures in both chambers are at about the same level. As a consequence, the temperature in the VT chamber proceeds to rise to create an air pressure difference between the chambers, causing the piston assembly to move in the direction of the CT chamber to compress the air therein. When the temperature in the VT chamber reaches a level close to that of the ambient air, the sensing system then acts to close the valve, and the temperature in the VT chamber then proceeds to fall. As this occurs, the pressurized air in the CT chamber forces the piston assembly in the direction of the VT chamber to a point of equilibrium to complete the cycle. The reciprocation of the piston assembly is converted into output power.

Abstract: Systems and methods of measuring feet and designing and creating orthopedic inserts are described. A leg length discrepancy of a user is measured and this data, along with foot size are input into a computer. The computer then creates a computer model of a custom shoe insert based on this information. The computer model is then sent to a 3D printer to print the insert. The insert consists of a base insert with partial correction, and several additional layers that are added successively over time until a full correction is obtained. This eliminates any pain associated with a fully corrective insert, and allows the body to adjust gradually to the correction.
