Abstract:
Digital signature generation apparatus, comprising an envelope generator operable to generate an envelope representation, of only one polarity, of a sampled data segment, and operable for each of successive portions comprising a predetermined plurality of samples to provide a portion sum value as the sum the values of the samples in the portion, thereby to provide said envelope representation; a threshold value generator operable to determine a threshold value for each portion of the envelope representation; an event detector operable to detect, as an event, a transition of a portion sum value across the threshold value for the portion concerned; and a signature generator operable in response a detected event to generate a digital signature characteristic of the sampled data segment.
Abstract:
A user (102) hears an audio program being broadcast and can record a sample of the audio. The sample is then conveyed to an analyzing means (106) to determine to which broadcast station the user is listening. The analyzing means monitors many broadcast channels. Thus, characteristics of the audio sample and samples taken from the broadcast channels can be compared to find a match. Broadcast information pertaining to the broadcast channel from which the match was found may then be reported back to the user, combined with an advertisement of a promotion, prize notification, discount offers, and other information specific for a certain radio station for example.
Abstract:
Methods and systems are provided for gathering research data that includes information pertaining to audio signals received on a portable device, such as a cell phone. Frequency domain data is received or produced, a signature is extracted from the frequency domain data and an ancillary code is read from the frequency domain data.

Abstract:
Methods and apparatus to determine audience viewing of video-on-demand programs are disclosed. An example method disclosed herein to monitor presentation of video-on-demand content comprises obtaining server metering data determined using a server metering device in communication with a video-on-demand server, the video-on-demand server to provide the video-on-demand content specifically to a first subscriber site among a plurality of subscriber sites, obtaining subscriber metering data corresponding to media content presented at the first subscriber site, the subscriber metering data determined using a site metering device different from the server metering device, and combining the subscriber metering data and the server metering data to monitor the video-on-demand content provided specifically to the first subscriber site.
Abstract:
Hashes are short summaries or signatures of data files which can be used to identify the file. The disclosed method generates robust hashes for multimedia content, for example, audio clips. The audio clip is divided into successive (preferably overlapping) frames. For each frame, the frequency spectrum is divided into bands. A robust property of each band (e.g. energy) is computed and represented by a respective hash bit. An audio clip is thus represented by a concatenation of binary hash words, one for each frame. To identify a possibly compressed audio signal, a block of hash words derived therefrom is matched by a computer with a large database. Such matching strategies are also disclosed. In an advantageous embodiment, the extraction process also provides information as to which of the hash bits are the least reliable. Flipping these bits considerably improves the speed and performance of the matching process.
Abstract:
A detection apparatus includes a tuner tuned to the program and a meter coupled to the tuner and arranged to detect content ancillary information from the program tuned by the tuner. The content ancillary information may be a media link, closed captioning information, or the like. The meter may also be arranged to extract a broadcast signature from the program. A comparator compares the broadcast signature to a reference signature selected from a library of reference signatures based upon the content ancillary information. Broadcast signatures from unknown programs may be clustered at least partially on the basis of the content ancillary information.
Abstract:
A method for facilitating the archiving of video content, wherein said method at least comprises distributing collectors at which video signals are distributed, the video signals being distributed in many geographically different places, and/or over different time periods; making said video signals go through a fingerprint extraction process to form extracted fingerprint data via collectors; and sending the fingerprint data collected from the collectors to a data center for archiving via a data path. The method according to the present invention can extract fingerprint information from video content for the purpose of archiving without the huge storage capacity required, can collect statistics and extract additional information from the archived video information automatically based on the user entered searching video clip information, and can search through video fingerprint data for identifying historical recording and collect statistics and extract additional information of video content easily at low hardware cost.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus to maintain audience privacy while determining viewing of video-on-demand (VOD) programs are disclosed. An example method disclosed herein comprises obtaining subscriber metering data from a site metering device monitoring presentation of VOD content at a first subscriber site, obtaining server metering data from a VOD server, the server metering data including identification information for a plurality of subscriber sites to identify particular VOD content provided uniquely to each of the subscriber sites, the identification information manipulated to preserve anonymity of the plurality of subscriber sites, manipulating at least a portion of the subscriber metering data to determine a first manipulated identifier to identify the first subscriber site, and using the first manipulated identifier to cross-reference the manipulated identification information included in the server metering data to merge the subscriber metering data and the portion of the server metering data uniquely associated with the first subscriber site.
Abstract:
A system identifies which of first and second signal sources is supplying a program signal to a monitored receiver. The first and second signal sources and the monitored receiver are located in a household. The system extracts a reference program signature representative of an output of the monitored receiver and first and second source program signatures representative of an output of the first and second signal sources. The system identifies which of the first and second signal sources is a source of the program signal in response to the reference program signature and the first and second source program signatures.
