Abstract:
The present invention relates to a CCR2 deletion mutant, designated “CCR2-64I.” CCR2 is a C—C chemokine receptor and has been implicated as a co-receptor for HIV-1. It has been discovered that the presence of the CCR2-64I allele correlates with a postponement of AIDS outcomes, and that infected individuals who have the CCR2-64I allele are at a reduced risk for progression from HIV-1 infection to the development of clinical AIDS and death. Isolated nucleic acid molecule encoding CCR2-64I and the establishment of cell lines that express CCR2-64I provides valuable tools for continuing research on HIV infection. Diagnostic methods for analysis of the allelic frequency of CCR2 wild-type and 64I genes are provided. In addition, antibodies which bind to CCR2-64I, CCR2-64I variants, and CCR2 binding agents represent potential anti-HIV agents.

Abstract:
The invention provides a system and method for predicting areas where lightning strikes are likely to occur by evaluating radar and temperature data. Radar volume data is analyzed to locate cloud tops that extend above a height corresponding to a temperature line of about −10° C. Areas where cloud tops extend above the height of the −10° C. line and that have a radar composite reflectivity greater than 30 dBZ are designated as probable lightning threat areas. Radar movement is tracked across at least two time periods, and a correlation algorithm predicts the future location of lightning threat areas at predetermined time periods (e.g., 10 minutes, 20 minutes, and 30 minutes) based on predicted radar values. A computer display shows the predicted location of the lightning threat areas for the future time periods. In one variation, selected structures or areas (e.g., power lines, factories, or the like) are superimposed on a computer display with predicted lightning threat areas to illustrate where lightning damage is likely to occur.
Abstract:
A system for injection molding of large components is disclosed that provides for the production of higher quality large molded components with a reduction in both molding cycle time and molding costs. Plasticized material communicates with a mold, having at least one single cavity, through a manifold that has at least two spaced valve gates that are independently opened and closed as directed by a controller to selectively communicate plasticized material to the mold cavity at separate locations in the mold cavity. The controller directs the valve gates to sequentially open and close during the filling phase so as to achieve the desired melt front advancement within the mold cavity. Once the mold cavity has been filled as desired, the valve gates are closed to effectively seal the manifold from the mold cavity. The plasticized material within the manifold is held in compression while the mold cavity is open, so as to prevent appreciable expansion of the material that has been found to result in molded part imperfections. Additional material may be plasticized and held in compression while the mold cavity is open, resulting in a further reduction in overall cycle time.
Abstract:
A journal printing apparatus is disclosed for a journal receipt printing machine. The apparatus semi-automatically loads the journal paper onto the take-up spool. The machine is also characterized by drop-in loading for the journal paper supply roll. The journal printing apparatus utilizes a duckbill take-up core or spool that is bifurcated into stationary and movable sections. The bifurcated spool is spring loaded, and is caused to bias closed by movement of a cam. The leader of the journal paper is placed over the stationary section of the spool and a gear train causes the cam to rotate again. The gear train then forces the duckbill spool shut against its biasing, thus capturing the paper between the spool sections. In this fashion, the procedure of journal paper resupply is accomplished without the user having to thread paper.

A surgical instrument is provided for performing a variety of endoscopic or laparoscopic procedures including the electrocauterization of tissue. The instrument includes a handle assembly, a tubular body extending from the handle assembly therein defining a longitudinal axis, a tool assembly associated with a distal end of the tubular body including a tool base and tool members, an electrical connector electrically associated with the tool members, electrical insulation being provided in association with electrical conducting components, a first mechanism for effectuating remote articulation of the tool assembly with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tubular body, and a second mechanism for effectuating remote rotation of the tool assembly about the longitudinal axis of the tubular body.
Abstract:
A monitor (10) includes a transducer (20) registered with a pump (22) for generating electrical signals reflecting the status of the pump (22). The output of the transducer (20) is conditioned by a pump monitor circuit (16) to indicate the status (18) of the pump (22) and for subsequent delivery to an alarm processing unit (C) and alarm condition (D). The monitor (10) reports both normal and abnormal pump (22) conditions.
Abstract:
A polarizer having increased hydrolytic stability is produced by impregnating a polyvinyl alcohol substrate with an iodine containing composition and then subjecting the substrate to both concentrated infrared and ultraviolet radiation treatments sufficient to substantially increase the hydrolytic stability of the thusly formed polarizer. The polyvinyl alcohol film had been laminated to a polyester support with a dispersed, aqueous composition of polyvinyl alcohol or polyurethane on its surface.
