Abstract:
A method of processing video image data for use in the storage or transmission of moving digital video images, includes decomposition of each frame image into an equivalent set of sub-images containing information on different length scales, derivation of encoded prediction rules from the decomposed data to approximate each sub-image using data from the immediately preceding compressed sub-image and data from the current sub-image to produce compressed data of an image for subsequent storage or transmission to a receiver and reconstruction, after retrieval or receipt, by comparison of the compressed data received for the current frame image with the reconstruction of the preceding frame image.
Abstract:
A process and apparatus are provided for controlling the alignment of a transmit laser beam (1a) of a first coherent detection optical communications transmitter/receiver terminal with a further coherent detection optical communications transmitter/receiver terminal relative to a receive laser beam (8). The first terminal incorporates a transmit laser beam generator (1) operable to form and pass the transmit beam (1a) through a point ahead mechanism (2) to a telescope assembly (6) operable to receive the receive laser beam (8). The apparatus includes a detector/receiver unit, means (3) for taking a component (1b) of the transmit laser beam (1a) from the transmit laser beam (1a) for receiving the receive laser beam (8) from the telescope assembly (6) and for feeding the transmit laser beam (8) to the detector/receiver unit (10), and means (16, 17, 18, 19, 20 ,21, 22, 23, 24) for detecting, separating and processing the received transmit laser beam component (1b) and received receive beam (8) at the detector/receiver unit (10) to provide signals indicative of the actual alignment of the transmit and receive beams (1a, 8), means (25) for comparing the actual alignment signals with desired alignment values to generate difference signals and means for operating the point ahead mechanism (2) in dependence upon the generated difference signals variably to control the alignment of the transmit beam (1a) relative to the receive beam (8).
Abstract:
A laser beam communication system for spacecraft in which each communication terminal comprises, for steering the beam projected from that terminal, four mirrors, each mounted on a mechanism capable of rotating the mirror about a constant defined axis. The mirrors and their attached mechanisms are arranged in pairs with one pair on either side of a magnifying telescope. All rotating joints in each mechanism are constructed using flexure pivots. Such a pointing element can provide both the range and accuracy required for an important class of free space laser links without introducing any extra friction into the pointing system.
Abstract:
A system for ablating tissue includes a reusable control unit including a processor monitoring and controlling ablation and a control interface receiving input to and output from the processor in combination with a disposable procedure set releasably connectable to the control unit to couple to the control interface for communication with the processor.
Abstract:
A satellite communication system includes at least one base station, at least one satellite that can be brought into communication connection with the base station for data transmission, and a plurality of receivers adapted to receive signals transmitted from the satellite. The communication system is designed to transmit data in at least one uplink data stream from the base station to the satellite with a first data transmission rate and to transmit data in at least one downlink data stream from the satellite to the receivers with a second data transmission rate. The first data transmission rate is lower than the second data transmission rate and the satellite is provided with a data storage adapted to store the data transmitted from the base station to the satellite and to supply the data provided for the transmission to the receivers.
Abstract:
A rectal thermal monitor for transrectal prostate temperature measurement includes a handle arranged in a proximal end portion of the monitor for gripping by a user, an elongate shaft extending from the handle, and an expandable distal probe portion arranged on a distal end of the shaft. The distal probe portion is arranged at a position opposite the handle portion, and is shaped to facilitate insertion through an anal sphincter and into a rectum of a patient. A cover element, is provided for covering at least a portion of the distal probe portion, and is made from a resilient material. A temperature sensing element is arranged within the distal probe portion, beneath the cover element, and is adapted and configured to sense a temperature of the prostate of the patient through the rectum wall of the patient. Further, and actuator can be provided to actuate the expandable distal probe portion, to increase a diameter thereof.

A system for ablating tissue includes a reusable control unit including a processor monitoring and controlling ablation and a control interface receiving input to and output from the processor in combination with a disposable procedure set releasably connectable to the control unit to couple to the control interface for communication with the processor.
Abstract:
A suturing apparatus comprises a pair of jaws. A bendable needle housed in one of the jaws is adapted to carry a suture. An optional suture receiver may be disposed adjacent to the opposite jaw. A transition block curves the needle and directs it in a direction generally unparallel to an axis of the carrying jaw. The needle may also be configured to retrieve a suture. A retaining mechanism holds a suture in place to be engaged by the needle. The jaw housing the needle may include a lateral opening through which the suture may be inserted. The needle may also include a lateral notch which may be aligned with lateral opening to receive the suture. An actuator coupled to the needle enables the user to move the needle proximally to align the notch with the lateral slot.
Abstract:
A manually actuated breast pump is provided. The breast pump has a breast cup, pump mechanism and a container. The components of the breast pump are easily assembled and disassembled to facilitate use, cleaning, manufacture and transport. The breast pump can apply a negative pressure, a positive pressure or both to a user's breast. The breast pump provides fluid isolation between the pressure source and the expressed milk.
