Abstract:
An electrical connector includes a shield having opposed planar side panels. The shield is configured to receive a shield of a mating connector within the side panels. A dielectric is attached to the shield. The dielectric is configured to receive the coaxial cable and the shield is electrically connected to an outer conductor of the coaxial cable. The side panels are configured to abut and engage side panels of an adjacent connector with a substantially flush fit.
Abstract:
An energy producing apparatus utilizing magnetic pistons is provided. Permanent magnets of like polarity are employed within a cylinder of each piston and upon a top portion of said piston. The like polarity pistons have a natural desire to repel one another. A ferromagnetic slipper unit is inserted into a gap in said cylinder between the permanent magnets of like polarity to interfere with said magnetic repulsive field and to cause a magnetic attractive field. Each piston is attached to a push rod which in turn is attached to shaft and flywheel system. The change in magnetic fields from repulsion to attraction cases the piston to push up and down and turn the shaft and flywheel system. Two pistons in coincidence can be used so that while one piston is repelling, the other is attracting causing an increase in motive power.
Abstract:
Various methods and devices are disclosed for improving cardiac function in hearts having zones of infarcted (akinetic) and aneurysmal (dyskinetic) tissue regions. The methods and devices reduce the radius of curvature in walls of the heart proximal infarcted and aneurysmal regions to reduce wall stress and improve pumping efficiency. The inventive methods and related devices include splinting of the chamber wall proximal the infarcted region and various other devices and methods including suture and patch techniques.
Abstract:
A surgical retractor includes a pair of parallel arms that are mounted to a toothed crossbar. One of the arms is fixed to one end of the crossbar, while the other arm is movable along the crossbar by means of a pinion. One or both of the arms includes on its upper surface a bar having a longitudinally extending flat surface. A rod is connected to the bar by means of a bracket. The bracket can be locked in position relative to the bar by a first set screw that engages the flat surface. A rod extends through an opening in the bracket and is retained in place there by a second set screw. The rod includes a circumferentially extending shoulder that engages the bracket so as to locate the rod in a desired position. One or more flat surfaces are formed on the rod adjacent the shoulder for engagement by the second set screw. One of the flat surfaces causes the rod to be positioned precisely as necessary to perform a surgical procedure, while the other of the flat surfaces enables the rod to be moved to an out-of-the way position and locked in place there. One or more retractor blades of the wire basket type are connected to the rod by means of universal clamps. The basket portions of the retractor blades are made of a malleable wire that enables the configuration of the blades to be changed by the surgeon as desired.
Abstract:
A mitral annuloplasty ring that has an outward and an upward posterior bow. The ring defines a closed, modified oval shape with a minor-major axis dimension ratio of between about 3.3:4 to 4:4. The ring is made of a material that will substantially resist distortion when subjected to the stress imparted thereon when the ring is implanted in the mitral valve annulus of an operating human heart. As a result, the annuloplasty ring corrects for pathologies associated with mitral valve prolapse, or Barlow's syndrome, in which the leaflets tend to be elongated or floppy.
Abstract:
Disclosed is an apparatus, method, and program product that enables distribution of operating system resources on a nodal basis in the same proportions as the expected system workload. The preferred embodiment of the present invention accomplishes this by assigning various types of weights to each node to represent their proportion of the overall balance within the system. Target Weights represent the desired distribution of the workload based on the existing proportions of processor and memory resources on each node. The actual workload balance on the system is represented by Current Weights, which the operating system strives to keep as close to the Target Weights as possible, on an ongoing basis. When the system is started, operating system services distribute their resources nodally in the same proportions as the Target Weights, and can request to be notified if the Target Weights ever change. If processors and/or memory are subsequently added or removed, new Target Weights are calculated at that time, and all services which requested notification are notified so they can redistribute their resources according to the new Target Weights or a stepwise refinement thereof.
Abstract:
A mitral heart valve annuloplasty ring having a posterior bow that conforms to an abnormal posterior aspect of the mitral annulus. The ring may be generally oval having a major axis and a minor axis, wherein the posterior bow may be centered along the minor axis or offset in a posterior section. The ring may be substantially planar, or may include upward bows on either side of the posterior bow. The ring may include a ring body surrounded by a suture-permeable fabric sheath, and the ring body may be formed of a plurality of concentric ring elements. The ring is semi-rigid and the posterior bow is stiff enough to withstand deformation once implanted and subjected to normal physiologic stresses. The ring elements may be bands of semi-rigid material. A method of repairing an abnormal mitral heart valve annulus having a depressed posterior aspect includes providing a ring with a posterior bow and implanting the ring to support the annulus without unduly stressing the attachment sutures.
Abstract:
This invention is directed to a method for joining, by axial movement, inner and outer metal pieces having different hardnesses. The method involves forming the harder piece to have a radial groove in its juncture surface. The harder piece has leading and trailing portions on either side of the radial groove. The leading portion is dimensioned to permit it to slide with respect to the softer piece and the trailing portion is dimensioned for swaging interference with the softer piece. Relative male-female axial movement is imparted to the pieces, thereby urging the junction surface of the softer piece along the leading portion of the harder piece until the softer piece engages the trailing portion of the harder piece. Relative axial force is applied for continued axial movement whereby the softer piece is forced past the groove such that swaging interference causes a portion of the softer piece to be upset into the groove, thereby creating a permanent joint between the pieces.
Abstract:
A molecular complex which includes a template having a plurality of ionic functional groups and a conducting polymer. The conducting polymer may be polypyrrole, polythiophene or poly(phenylene sulfide) and substituted versions thereof. The conducting polymer has charges on it which bind to the organic functional group. The complex has a polypyrrole ration of between about 0.5 to 4.5.
Abstract:
An annuloplasty ring having a three-dimensional discontinuous form generally arranged about an axis with two free ends that are axially offset. The ring is particularly suited for repair of the tricuspid valve, and more closely conforms to the annulus shape. The ring is more flexible in bending about radially extending axes than about the central axis. The ring may have an inner structural support covered by a pliable sleeve and/or a fabric tube. The structural support may have a varying cross-section, such as a C-shaped cross-section in a mid-section between two free ends and a rectangular cross-section at the free ends. A deliver template having a mounting ring with about the same shape as the ring facilitates implant, and may be releasably attached to a delivery handle. The deliver template may include a plurality of cutting guides for releasably attaching the annuloplasty ring thereto while presenting maximum outer surface area of the ring. The template may have an outwardly-facing groove to receive and retain the ring.
