    摘要: An electrooptic switch in which one of four channel waveguides is selectively induced in a thin slab of electrooptic material by the application of an electric field between intersecting strips of electrodes disposed adjacent the top surface of the slab and other intersecting strips of electrodes disposed adjacent the bottom surface directly below the top surface strips. The electrode strips comprise (1) primary electrodes to which constant potentials are applied to induce optical paths partially through the slab and (2) switching electrodes, vertically displaced and electrically isolated from the primary electrodes, to which alternating potentials are applied to complete the desired optical path through the slab.

    摘要: An active optical-waveguide branch which has the maximum possible switching efficiency and minimum length. The waveguide includes a single main waveguide branched into two element arms or paths such that optical radiation passing through the main waveguide will be normally divided equally into each branched arm. Electrodes are formed between the branching arms and on the outer side of each arm. The electrodes are connected electrically so that the potential between the center electrode and each of the outer electrodes may be either negative or positive with each outer electrode having the same potential with respect to the center electrode. The optical radiation will choose one arm or the other depending on the polarity of the potential applied. The electrode separation is preferably a decreasing function of the length, z, of the electrode along the length of the arms. That is, for a constant voltage on the electrodes, the mode synchronism is a function of the length, z.

A first interferometric modulator responsive to a source light and to the subcarrier modulated signal produces a first modulated optical signal. A second interferometric modulator cascade coupled to the first modulator and being responsive to the first modulated optical signal and to a microwave local oscillator signal produces a second modulated optical signal. Means coupled between the first and second modulators transmit the first modulated optical signal from the first modulator to the second modulator. Means responsive to the second modulated optical signal produce an output signal.

    摘要: A depolarized fiber optic gyroscope with a detector for detecting a rotat about an axis of rotation and a method therefor is disclosed. The gyroscope includes a depolarized light source for generating the depolarized light; a gyro coil for conducting depolarized light about the axis of rotation, the gyro coil including a coil of a non-polarization preserving fiber having first and second ends; a depolarizer with first and second ports for eliminating birefringence induced scale factor variations caused by the non-polarization preserving fiber, the first port of the depolarizer being coupled to the first end of the gyro coil; and a coupler device for coupling the second end of the gyro coil, the second port of the depolarizer, the detector and the depolarized light source, without utilizing a polarizer.
