Abstract: A method for synchronization of first and second microgrids, having respective first and second voltages and frequencies. The method includes determining a possible voltage and frequency range, determining an overlapping voltage range, determining an overlapping frequency range, selecting a third voltage within the overlapping voltage range. The method also includes selecting a third frequency within the overlapping frequency range. The method also includes controlling the first microgrid to change from the first voltage and frequency to the third voltage and frequency. The method also includes controlling the second microgrid to change from the second voltage and frequency to the third voltage and frequency. The method also includes connecting the first and second microgrids to each other by closing a switch there between.

Abstract: A method for restoration of a fault isolation in a medium voltage, MV, network having a plurality of feeders and a plurality of normally open, NO, switches possibly in parallel with MV direct current, DC, links is presented. The control system is structured to detect a fault in the first transformer or the transmission network, isolate the first distribution network from the fault, determine a set point of the DC interconnection system, and operate the DC interconnection system using the set point so as to transfer a portion of the MVAC from the second distribution network portion to the first distribution network portion.

One exemplary embodiment is a method for operating an alternating current (AC) distribution network including a first feeder line, a second feeder line, and a third feeder line. The method includes isolating a faulted portion of the first feeder line from a healthy portion of the first feeder line; closing a tie switch coupled between the healthy portion and the second feeder line in response to isolating the faulted portion from the healthy portion; determining the second feeder line is experiencing an overload condition after closing the tie switch; and transferring AC power including transferring AC power using a direct current (DC) interconnection system coupled to the third feeder line effective to remove the overload condition from the second feeder line.

Abstract: A distributed method is provided for controlling electrical power in a microgrid, wherein a plurality of distributed generators supply electrical power to the microgrid, and each of the distributed generators is connected to a controller for controlling the real and reactive output power from the distributed generator. The method includes the steps of measuring, for each of the distributed generators, a voltage level at a measuring point associated with that distributed generator and forwarding the measured voltage level to the controller connected to that distributed generator; determining, for each of the controllers, a parameter value related to the received measured voltage level and/or related to a reactive current injection capacity of the distributed generator connected to that controller; communicating, from each of the controllers, its determined parameter value to each other ones of the controllers; determining a sequential order in which the controllers are to control the distributed generators to inject reactive power into the microgrid based on the communicated parameter values; and controlling the distributed generators to inject reactive power into the microgrid by means of the controllers in the determined sequential order.
