    Abstract: Systems and methods are described to render borders of controls and indicators in a graphical user interface (GUI), such that the rendered borders have continuous curvatures. In one aspect, a method includes generating a border of a GUI element to be represented in a GUI. The border includes a first straight side, a second straight side, and a corner portion that joins together the first straight side and the second straight side, such that a portion of the border that includes the first straight side, the corner portion and the second straight side is continuous and has continuous curvature. Additionally, the method includes representing the GUI element in the GUI.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a search capability to allow a user to easily locate a preference control, file, folder, control, or other system resource or data item associated with a search result. In one embodiment, a user enters a search term (or a portion thereof) in a search field associated with one or more resource types that may be searched. The user may be presented with a pop-up menu containing a list of likely matches. The user selects the desired preference control from the pop-up menu, and the corresponding preference pane, or other container, containing the selected data item, control, or other resource is displayed. In one aspect, as the user enters the search term (or portion thereof), certain icons are highlighted. Specifically, those icons that represent containers containing matching data items (such as preference panes having controls that match the search term) are highlighted. Different types of highlighting can be used depending on the degree of certainty as to which container is likely to contain the correct match.

    Abstract: A computer-human interface provides a mechanism to manage the available space of a computer display in a manner that facilitates navigation, among multiple windows that are overlaid upon one another. The interface includes a user-selectable mode in which the windows are rearranged, and resized if necessary, so that all open windows can be simultaneously viewed within the area of the display, thereby enabling any one of the windows to be easily selected for access. In effect, the presentation of the windows is “flattened” so that all windows appear at the same virtual depth, rather than overlapping one another. With this approach, there is no need to minimize windows in order to access one that is overlaid by another, thereby enabling the user to keep the content of all windows visible and accessible. Subsets of windows can be repositioned in the same manner, or all windows can be removed from the display area for access to desktop objects.
