Abstract: A spark plug for an internal combustion engine includes a housing, an insulator, and a center electrode. The center electrode includes an inside electrode portion and an outside electrode portion. The housing includes a ground electrode projecting from a distal end portion of the housing toward the distal end side of the plug at a part in a plug circumferential direction. The outside electrode portion projects along a surface of the insulator tip in a direction away from a boundary with the inside electrode portion and includes a projection, which is capable of causing an electrical discharge between the ground electrode and the outside electrode portion. The projection is formed in a region in the plug circumferential direction. The projection and the ground electrode are located at positions different from each other in the plug circumferential direction.

Abstract: An ignition apparatus inputs energy during a predetermined energy input period after the interruption of a primary electric current by an ignition switch and a discharge of an ignition plug caused by a secondary electric current. Moreover, the ignition apparatus includes a blow-off detection unit that detects, during the energy input period IGW after the start of the discharge by the ignition plug, occurrence of blow-off of the discharge. When the secondary electric current I2 drops below a blow-off detection electric current threshold value Ibo at a time instant tbo in a “second region” where it is impossible to perform a re-discharge after blow-off, the blow-off detection unit determines that blow-off has occurred and the ignition apparatus stops the energy input from an energy input unit to an ignition coil. By preventing unnecessary energy input, it is possible to suppress unnecessary electric power consumption and wear of electrodes of the ignition plug.

Abstract: An ignition device includes an ignition coil, an ignition plug and ignition control unit. The ignition control unit includes a secondary current adjusting unit that adjusts, in each cycle, an amount of the secondary current after initiating the discharge, a discharge extension detecting unit that detects an amount of extension of the discharge, and a short determination unit that determines whether a discharge-short has occurred. The ignition control unit controls the secondary current control unit such that a first step and a second step are repeatedly executed. The first step decreases the secondary current while keeping the secondary current higher than a predetermined lower current limit, when the extension amount detected by the discharge extension detecting unit is a predetermined extension amount or more. The second step increases the secondary current when the short determination unit determines that a discharge-short has occurred.

Abstract: An ignition apparatus for an internal combustion engine which is capable of having a high-degree of ignition performance and being reduced in size is provided. The ignition apparatus includes the spark plug mounted in an end of the plug hole formed in the internal combustion engine, the first ignition coil, the second ignition coil, and the control portion. The first ignition coil includes the primary coil and the secondary coil and has a secondary side electrically connected to the spark plug. The second ignition coil includes the primary coil and the secondary coil and is connected to the spark plug in parallel to the first ignition coil. The control portion controls energization of the first ignition coil and the second ignition coil. The secondary voltage developed at the second ignition coil is lower in level than that developed at the first ignition coil. The control portion works to create the secondary voltage at the first ignition coil and then create the secondary voltage at the second ignition coil to have the spark plug continue to discharge.

Abstract: An ignition device includes an ignition coil with a primary coil and a secondary coil, a spark plug with center and ground electrodes for discharge therebetween, and a voltage limiting circuit. The voltage limiting circuit limits voltage applied between the electrodes of the spark plug such that the voltage has an absolute value limited within a predetermined voltage limiting value. The voltage limiting value is differentiated from each other in first and second stages. The first stage is defined as a period in which an initial discharge peak ends, the initial discharge peak being initially generated by electric energy. The second stage is defined as a period after the end of the initial discharge peak. The voltage limiting value in the first stage is lower than the voltage limiting value in the second stage.

Abstract: An ignition apparatus for internal combustion engine includes an ignition coil in which a main primary coil and an auxiliary primary coil are magnetically coupled with a secondary coil that is connected to a spark plug. Abstract: An ignition system includes a primary coil, a secondary coil, a first switch, a second switch, a third switch, a diode, and a switch control section. In the primary coil, a power supply is connected to a contact point between a first winding and a second winding. The secondary coil is magnetically coupled to the primary coil. The first switch is connected in series with the first winding. The second switch is connected in series with the second winding on the opposite side from the contact point. The third switch is connected in series with the second switch. The diode includes an anode connected between the second switch and the third switch and a cathode connected to the contact point. The switch control section controls opening and closing of each switch.

Abstract: An ignition system includes a primary coil, a secondary coil, a first switch, a second switch, a third switch, a fourth switch, and a switch control section. The first switch connects and disconnects an electrical path between a first terminal and a ground. The second switch connects and disconnects an electrical path between a power supply and a second terminal. The third switch connects and disconnects an electrical path between the power supply and the first terminal. The fourth switch connects and disconnects an electrical path between a contact point and the ground. The switch control section controls opening and closing of each switch to connect and disconnect the associated electrical path.
