Abstract:
A head for a walk-around costume is provided that is adapted for enhanced visibility. The costume head includes an outer shell defining an interior space for receiving a head of a human performer. The outer shell includes an aperture allowing incoming light from an exterior space to enter the interior space, and an eye location for the human performer is spaced apart from the aperture when the head is received in the interior space. To provide an enlarged field of view, the costume head includes an optical viewfinder assembly disposed within the interior space of the outer shell between the aperture and the eye location. The optical viewfinder assembly is adapted for receiving the incoming light and transmitting the incoming light to the eye location to move a viewpoint of the human performer to the aperture to provide a larger field of view of the exterior space.
Abstract:
A holographic display system for generating a super hologram with full parallax in different fields of view in the horizontal and vertical directions. The display system includes assemblies or subsystems each adapted to combine holographic displays and coarse integral displays to produce or display a coarse integral hologram. Briefly, the display system described herein teaches techniques for enhancing operations of coarse integral holographic (CIH) displays. The enhanced CIH displays may utilize ganged scanners, may operate scanners to provide boustrophedon scanning, may be configured to add color information such by view sequential color hologram display and scanning, may replace or supplement X-Y scanning abilities with a resonant scanner, and may replace physical lenslet arrays by generating and displaying a holographic lenslet for each elemental hologram used to create the super hologram.
Abstract:
A special effects device for providing an energy sword effect. The device includes two long plastic semi-cylinders, and these two blade body members are rolled perpendicular to their length, which creates compact cylinders of material of small volume that can be provided on a pair of spools in a hilt. To extend the blade, a motor provided in the hilt unrolls the blade body members from the spools. Each blade body member passes through a blade forming guideway that nests the semi-cylindrical blade body members together as they leave the hilt. To retract the blade, the process is reversed. The lighting of the blade is achieved with a flexible strip of light sources. The light source strip is attached to a blade end cap and positioned in the center of the two blade body members such that it is pulled up along with the blade body members during their extension.
Abstract:
An apparatus for displaying three dimensional (3D) images to a viewer without the need for 3D glasses. The apparatus includes a display element with a lenticular display surface that is supported to be horizontal and face upward into a viewing space. The apparatus includes a location tracking element tracking a location of a viewer in the viewing space relative to the lenticular display surface. The apparatus includes a display controller generating reprojected content for operating the display element to display 3D images via the lenticular display surface. The reprojected content is generated by determining for each pixel of the display element the content or images passing through tracked and/or determined eye locations and then remapping content delivered to each of the pixels of the display element to achieve a predefined pattern of content in viewpoints of fixed camera positions for the display element.
Abstract:
An illumination distribution system for distributing high power illumination to a set of projectors. The system includes a display element, such as a spatial light modulator (SLM), receiving light from a laser. The system includes a fiber optic array with connection locations for optical fibers. The system includes projectors that are each coupled to the fiber optic array at one or more of the connection locations with at least one optical fiber. The system includes a controller operating the display element at a first time to display a first hologram and at a second time to display a second hologram differing from the first hologram such that the laser light is split, with equal or unequal splitting ratios, into beams that are selectively directed to the connection locations of the fiber optic array (e.g., based on a 2D routing pattern used to generate the holograms).

A holographic display system for generating a super hologram with full parallax in different fields of view in the horizontal and vertical directions. The display system includes assemblies or subsystems each adapted to combine holographic displays and coarse integral displays to produce or display a coarse integral hologram. The display system is adapted to combine such displays or display systems to add more detail or information. For example, the display system can be assembled as if it were made up of “holographic bricks” that can be stacked and combined to provide a unique image/output. Briefly, the display system described herein teaches techniques for combining coarse integral holographic (CIH) displays in a seamless and scalable manner, e.g., a display system where multiple spatial light modulators (SLMs) can be placed or provided behind coarse integral optics.
Abstract:
A display assembly for displaying a virtual image of an object with occlusion and contrast. The display assembly includes a virtual object display selectively displaying an image at a virtual object plane. The display assembly includes a mask generation screen assembly with a screen element operable in a first state in which the screen element is transparent to visible light and in a second state in which a portion is opaque. The screen element is positioned proximate to the virtual object plane. The opaque portion of the screen element corresponds in size, shape, and location to the displayed virtual object image to provide a mask for the virtual image. The screen element may include a projectable mask screen opaque in regions exposed to a predefined type of non-visible light. The non-visible light may be ultraviolet (UV) light or infrared (IR) light selectively provided by a UV or IR projector.
Abstract:
A dual layer display system for generating dimensional imagery. The system includes a first display device and a second display device with a light source. The second display device is arranged to be spaced apart from the first display device and to project output light onto a back surface of the first display device. The system alternatively operates the display devices in a first mode in which the first display device is transparent and the second display device displays back layer content and in a second mode in which the first display device displays front layer content and the second display device operates as a backlight to the first display device. In the first mode, the first display device displays a mask for the front layer content such as with gray-to-black pixels mapped to an object in the front layer content to block back layer content at this location.
