Abstract: This invention has an object to provide speed control method and device for an optical head in which a decelerating operation and so on for the optical head is carried out at an uniform deceleration or acceleration mode at high speed, and a speed control is carried out sufficiently accurately with excellent seekability and simple construction. The speed control device for the optical head according to this invention is so constructed that in the speed control of the seek operation of the optical head using feedback of a difference signal between a reference speed signal and a speed detection signal, the reference speed signal is switched to a ground level when a residual track number is below a predetermined value, and the optical head is pulled into a tracking servo operation when a predetermined time has elapsed since the switching time of the reference speed signal to the ground level.
