Abstract: A fuel injection system includes an outer support defining a fuel manifold and an inner support, with a feed arm extending radially between the inner support and the outer support. A plurality of outlet openings extending in an axial direction from the feed arm for feeding respective injection nozzles. The feed arm defines a plurality of fuel passages therethrough in fluid communication with the fuel manifold and outlet openings to supply fuel from the fuel manifold to the outlet openings. A heat shield extends from the outer support to the inner support and extends about the outer support and the feed arm to provide heat shielding to the fuel manifold and the fuel passages.

Abstract: A heat transfer arrangement includes two or more heat transfer cells. The heat transfer cells together define a boundary between a higher temperature region and a lower temperature region. Each of the two or more heat transfer cells includes two or more walls defining a fluid tight cavity. One or more wick is fused to an inner surface of one or more of the walls to wick liquid from a lower temperature portion of the cavity to a higher temperature portion of the cavity. Combustors having heat transfer arrangements with heat transfer cells and methods of making heat transfer arrangements are also described.

The method includes securing the fluid conduit to the heat shield in the shifted position.

Abstract: A system for inspecting spray nozzles includes a nozzle operatively connected to a source of pressurized liquid for issuing a spray from the nozzle. The system also includes a sensor positioned to detect frequencies of resonant modes in the spray. The nozzle and sensor can each be mounted to a spray test booth. A method of inspecting a spray nozzle includes issuing a liquid from a spray nozzle as a spray and using a sensor to detect frequencies of resonant modes in the spray. The sensor can include a diaphragm and detecting frequencies can include impinging at least some of the spray on the diaphragm, and monitoring vibrations of the diaphragm.

Abstract: A flow directing apparatus for directing fluid flowing therethrough includes a flow body defining an upstream facing inlet surface and an opposed downstream facing outlet surface with a bore defined through the flow body. The bore includes an inlet portion of the bore extending in a downstream direction from an inlet where the bore meets the inlet surface. An intermediate portion of the bore extends in a downstream direction from the inlet portion of the bore. A backstep portion of the bore extends downstream from the intermediate portion of the bore to an outlet where the bore meets the outlet surface. The intermediate portion of the bore has a cross-sectional flow area that is smaller than that of the inlet portion and smaller than that of the backstep portion to provide a backward facing step in flow area for flow through the bore.

Abstract: A nozzle includes a nozzle body defining a liquid circuit extending from a liquid inlet to a liquid outlet. The liquid circuit includes a plurality of spiral liquid passages spiraling radially inward relative to a spray axis. The spiral liquid passages all lie in a plane normal to the spray axis. A manifold assembly includes a plurality of such nozzles. A manifold ring is in fluid communication with the liquid inlet of each of the nozzles to deliver liquid to the nozzles. Abstract: A fuel injector includes a fuel nozzle configured to issue a spray of fuel from a fuel outlet in a downstream direction along an injection axis. The fuel nozzle includes a nozzle body that defines a main flow passage therethrough. An injection fuel line is in fluid communication with the fuel nozzle to supply fuel to the fuel nozzle. A torch ignitor with a flame outlet opens into the main flow passage of the fuel nozzle for issuing flame into the main flow passage. The flame outlet meets the main flow passage at a position that is downstream of the fuel outlet with respect to the downstream direction along the injection axis.
