Abstract: A method of simplified depth-based block partitioning (DBBP) for three-dimensional and multi-view video coding is disclosed. In one embodiment, the derivation of a representative value of a corresponding depth block or a reference texture block in a reference view for generating a segmentation mask and selecting a block partition are unified. In another embodiment, the first representative value, the second representative value, or both are calculated from partial samples of the corresponding depth block or the reference texture block. In yet another embodiment, a first representative value for first samples in a first partitioned block of the corresponding depth block or the reference texture block, and a second representative value for second samples in a second partitioned block of the corresponding depth block or the reference texture block for each of block partition candidates are determined.

Abstract: A method and apparatus of depth coding using depth modelling mode 1 (DMM1) are disclosed to reduce the wedgelet pattern table size. In one embodiment, a size-reduced wedgelet pattern for a reduced wedgelet pattern table is generated by excluding at least one non-corner adjacent-edge sample for adjacent-edge partition or at least one opposite-edge sample for opposite-edge partition from starting positions or from ending positions. The reduced wedgelet pattern table may also include at least one omitted wedgelet pattern in at least one wedgelet direction category. For the adjacent-edge partition, the starting positions and the ending positions may correspond to every other even non-corner adjacent-edge samples in a first and a second adjacent edges respectively. For the opposite-edge partition, the starting positions correspond to every other even opposite-edge samples in a first opposite edge and the ending positions include all opposite-edge samples in a second opposite edge.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for a three-dimensional encoding or decoding system incorporating view synthesis prediction (VSP) with reduced computational complexity and/or memory access bandwidth are disclosed. The system applies the VSP process to the texture data only and applies non-VSP process to the depth data. Therefore, when a current texture block in a dependent view is coded according to VSP by backward warping the current texture block to the reference picture using an associated depth block and the motion parameter inheritance (MPI) mode is selected for the corresponding depth block in the dependent view, the corresponding depth block in the dependent view is encoded or decoded using non-VSP inter-view prediction based on motion information inherited from the current texture block.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention re-use at least a portion of motion information of the corresponding block for the motion information of the current block if a corresponding reference picture corresponding to a reference picture pointed by the corresponding block is in a current reference picture list of the current block. If the corresponding reference picture is not in the current reference picture list of the current block, the motion information of the current block is determined using an alternative process, where at least a portion of the motion information, which was used in the previous case, is not re-used for the current block according to the alternative process.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for 3D coding to support fast bi-prediction having identical motion in the advanced residual prediction (ARP) are disclosed. Embodiment of the present invention use one or more aligned operations including data clipping and reference picture selection associated with motion vector derivation during residual predictor generation. When ARP mode is enabled, the residual prediction process for uni-prediction and bi-prediction perform same data clipping process and same reference picture selection process effectively. A single clipping operation or two clipping operations can be performed for both uni-prediction and bi-prediction.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for inter-view ARP (advanced residual prediction) are disclosed. According to one embodiment, a first inter-view reference block of a first inter-view reference picture in a first reference view is determined using a current MV (motion vector) of the current block in an inter-view direction. A first MV associated with the first inter-view reference block is derived. If the first MV points to a second inter-view reference picture in a second reference view, the derived MV is set to a default derived MV. A second temporal reference block in the second temporal reference picture corresponding to the current block is identified using the derived MV. An inter-view residual predictor corresponding to the difference between a second inter-view reference block in the first reference view and the second temporal reference block is generated and used as a predictor for the current inter-view residual of the current block.

Abstract: A method for three-dimensional or multi-view video coding receives input data associated with a current block of a current picture in a current dependent view, wherein the current block is inter-time coded based on an inter-time reference block located by a motion vector (MV), determines estimated DV (disparity vector) candidates from neighboring DVs, applies an evaluation function to the estimated DV candidates to obtain evaluation results for the estimated DV candidates, and selects a final estimated DV. The method then determines an inter-view reference region in an inter-view reference picture, determines first pseudo residues, wherein the first pseudo residues correspond to first differences between the inter-view reference region and a pseudo reference region in a pseudo reference picture located by the MV, and applies encoding or decoding to the input data associated with residues of the current block utilizing the first pseudo residues.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for three-dimensional video coding are disclosed. Embodiments according to the present invention apply the pruning process to one or more spatial candidates and at least one of the inter-view candidate and the temporal candidate to generate a retained candidate set. The pruning process removes any redundant candidate among one or more spatial candidates and at least one of the inter-view candidate and the temporal candidate. A Merge/Skip candidate list is then generated, which includes the retained candidate set. In one embodiment, the temporal candidate is exempted from the pruning process. In another embodiment, the inter-view candidate is exempted from the pruning process. In other embodiments of the present invention, the pruning process is applied to the inter-view candidate and two or more spatial candidates. The pruning process compares the spatial candidates with the inter-view candidate.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for coding a depth block in three-dimensional video coding are disclosed. Embodiments of the present invention divide a depth block into depth sub-blocks and determine default motion parameters. For each depth sub-block, the motion parameters of a co-located texture block covering the center sample of the depth sub-block are determined. If the motion parameters are available, the motion parameters are assigned as inherited motion parameters for the depth sub-block. If the motion parameters are unavailable, the default motion parameters are assigned as inherited motion parameters for the depth sub-block. The depth sub-block is then encoded or decoded using the inherited motion parameters or a motion candidate selected from a motion candidate set including the inherited motion parameters. The depth block may correspond to a depth prediction unit (PU) and the depth sub-block corresponds to a depth sub-PU.

Abstract: A method of simplified depth-based block partitioning (DBBP) for three-dimensional and multi-view video coding is disclosed. In one embodiment, the method receives input data associated with a current texture block in a dependent view, and determines a corresponding depth block or a reference texture block in a reference view for the current texture block. Then, the method derives a representative value based on the corresponding depth block or the reference texture block, and generates a current segmentation mask from the corresponding depth block or the reference texture block. Then, the method selects a current block partition from block partition candidates, wherein the representative value is used for generating the segmentation mask or selecting the current block partition or both, and applies DBBP coding to the current texture block according to the current segmentation mask generated and the current block partition selected.
