A chewing gum including at least one biodegradable polymer, wherein the molecular weight of the polymer is at least 105,000 g/mol (Mn). According to the invention, it has moreover been realized that various problems associated with the prior art may be effectively dealt with by increasing the molecular weight of at least one of the biodegradable polymers in the chewing gum when compared to conventional chewing gum polymers and thereby increasing the robustness of the chewing gum with respect to softeners, emulsifiers and e.g. flavor.

The invention relates to chewing gum comprising at least two different biodegradable polymers. According to the invention, a chewing gum comprising at least two different biodegradable polymers exhibits an improved texture prior to any adding of for example softeners. It has been realized that the desired chewing gum texture properties, contrary to every expectation and any prior art disclosures, may be actually be obtained when combining biodegradable chewing gum polymers, for example in the gum base or in the final gum.

A coated chewing gum element about 25 to 99.9% by weight of a chewing gum centre having at least one environmentally degradable elastomeric or resinous polymer and about 0.1 to 75% by weight of an outer coating and processes for providing the chewing gum. The outer coating is a hard sugar or sugarless coating, a film coating or a soft coating. The application of an outer coating prevents degradation of the degradable polymers prior to chewing due to physical or chemical effects, thereby improving the shelf life of the environmentally degradable chewing gum. After chewing, the chewing gum will degrade in the environment and can be removed more readily than chewing gum based on non-degradable polymers.

A method of dosing pharmaceutically active ingredients in a compressed chewing gum tablet includes the steps of: providing one or more pharmaceutically active ingredients, mixing a chewing gum composition including the one or more pharmaceutically active ingredients and chewing gum granules, the chewing gum granules including gum base, and dosing the chewing gum composition to obtain a desired weight of the chewing gum composition and thereby obtaining a desired dose of the pharmaceutically active ingredient in the chewing gum tablet.
