A modular link conveyor includes a plurality of modular link assemblies made up of links of an improved design assembled to create a closely interdigitating conveying surface. The improved links eliminate undesirable gaps or openings in the conveying surface. Projecting fingers are provided for filling the openings between the legs of each link and also between adjoining links. The fingers aid in preventing the entry of any foreign objects in these openings. In a first alternative embodiment, the fingers are arcuate projections that extend across the legs adjacent to both openings. In a second alternative embodiment, the modular link assemblies carry a plate which forms the conveying surface. The plate is provided with alternating forwardly and rearwardly projecting fingers for filling the openings in the conveyor surface. The improved conveyor may also include special side links formed by the inclusion of wings that interleave during the turning of the conveyor to prevent the entry of any foreign objects along the side edges of the conveyor. The wings are formed having at least two tiers.

A locking mechanism for attaching the inner race of a bearing assembly to a shaft is provided. A locating shoulder and an annular groove of constant depth are positioned on opposite sides of the bearing assembly when mounted on the shaft. An eccentric split ring is placed in the groove and is bodily positioned in a recess formed diametrically across the inner race. One of two opposed stops on opposite sides of the recess engages and cams against an enlarged portion of the ring upon initial relative rotation between the inner race and the shaft. The recess is formed by milling a gap across the end of the inner race.

A helical conveyor/accumulator includes a side flexing track wound in a helical pattern around a rotary drum. The drum includes longitudinal grooves that carry articles along the helically disposed track as the drum rotates. The grooves have article engaging ribs that cooperate to move the articles for feeding while allowing the article to be spaced from the ribs for accumulation. The side flexing track includes modular links coupled together by connecting rods. The track is supported around the drum by helical coils disposed at the inner edge and the outer edge of the track and support rods passing through the links and clamped to a frame. Articles are fed until stopped by a gate, and then when the gate is opened articles seat in successive grooves in the drum for metered or controlled discharge.

The bore of the cross bar has grooved side surfaces to mate with ridged surfaces included on the horizontal leg of the side rail brackets. Support brackets provided at strategic positions assist in supporting the weight of the entire conveyor system.

A conveyor system utilizing a plurality of modular links mounted by a plurality of transverse cross rods that retain the links together, forming the conveyor belt. The modular links include a plurality of apex portions, a plurality of leg portions extending therefrom and a plurality of foot portions. The apex portions include an elongated slot receiving the cross rod to allow longitudinal freedom of movement to the conveyor belt. The modular links further include side link portions that are adapted to engage conveyor guide rails integral with a support frame. Each side link portion is formed by including a depending arm having a transversely extending tab. A locking tab including resilient prongs is placed within a corresponding slot in each side link to retain the cross rod. Side rails attached to side rail brackets are provided adjacent the peripheral edges of the conveyor belt to maintain the transported product on the conveyor belt. The side rail brackets include a horizontally extending leg passing through a cross bar that supports the attached guide rails. The bore of the cross bar has grooved side surfaces to mate with ridged surfaces included on the horizontal leg of the side rail bracket. Support brackets provided at strategic positions assist in supporting the weight of the entire conveyor system. The combination of the shape of the modular links and the longitudinal freedom of movement of the conveyor allows substantially unrestricted motion through curves and bends.

In one aspect, a modular link conveyor chain including slats is capable of assuming a compressed and an expanded condition so as to permit side-flexing while moving along a forward run and a return run in an endless path. The chain is formed of links arranged in rows spaced apart in the conveying direction, the links of a first row including aligned apertures and the links of a second row including oversized apertures, such as slots, for aligning with the aligned apertures of the links in the first row. A first connector is associated with the corresponding apertures to interconnect the first and second rows of links. At least one elongated slat is mounted to the connector. The slat maybe mounted for pivoting movement between a first position forming at least part of a conveying surface along the forward run, and a second position along the return run.

An underguard assembly is provided for use with a modular conveyor of a conveyor system. The underguard is formed of a flexible web that hangs beneath the conveyor to catch debris falling from the sides of or through the conveying surface. To support the web, a stiffener rod is placed in an elongate pocket formed along each longitudinal edge. Opposed support assemblies spaced along the sides of the conveyor frame hold the enlarged pocket formed by the stiffener rod. An adjustment means is provided on each support assembly that allows the web to be easily attached and detached from the conveyor frame. Further, the support assemblies adjacent the end of the conveyor are modified to support the web beyond the end of the conveyor. This allows the web of a first modular conveyor to overlap with the web at the start of an adjacent modular conveyor, thereby providing a substantially seamless underguard function for a conveyor system.

A conveyor with enhanced cleanability includes a belt for conveying objects above a floor and having a forward run and a return run. A conveyor bed for supporting the belt provides an upper support for supporting the forward run of the belt and a lower support for supporting a return run of the belt. The upper support is adapted for moving toward and away from the lower support, including when the conveyor belt is sectioned into first and second portions corresponding to the forward run and the return run. A conveyor is also mounted in a cantilevered fashion, such as by embedding posts in a curable material forming a base for supporting the conveyor. Related methods are also disclosed.
