摘要: A method of calibration and verification of radiotherapy systems deduced radiation beam fluence profiles from the radiation source from a complete model of an extended radiation phantom together with dose information from a portal imaging device. The improved beam fluence profile characterization made with an iterative modeling which includes scatter effects may be used to compute dose profiles in the extended phantom or a patient who has been previously characterized with a CT scan. Deviations from the expected beam fluence profile can be used to detect patient misregistration.

摘要: A radiation therapy apparatus includes a collimator that changes the width of a fan beam of radiation as a treatment volume of the patient crosses the volume exposed by the beam so as to minimize the irradiation of healthy tissue at the front and back of the tumor. The width of the fan beam may also be controlled to treat multiple adjacent, similar slices of the patient at one time reducing the treatment duration.

摘要: A phantom for heavy ion radiation therapy provides characterization of an ion beam that may enter but not exit from the phantom. The phantom may include multiple materials and multiple spatially dispersed ion detectors to obtain signals that may be fit to known beam curves to accurately characterize the location and other parameters of Bragg peak of a given ion beam within a patient.

摘要: A method of proton tomotherapy provides uniform dose placement within a tumorous area on a slice by slice basis by locating a Bragg peak of the proton beam at the distal edge of the tumor and irradiating the tumor from a number of different angles without sweeping the range of the protons at the given angle. Uniform dose is provided by simultaneous intensity modulation of the beams. Treatment of the tumor in slices eliminates the need for a rotating gantry but allows the patient to be rotated instead. Accurate range placement is provided by a preliminary proton verification tomogram obtainable on the same equipment. A set of standard blocks permits this technique to be used with standard irradiation zones without additional range or intensity adjusting mechanism.

Separate channels passing modulated “beamlets” are possible by spacing the channels such that spreading of the beams and multiple angles of treatment eliminate cold spots.
