    摘要: A magnetic disk drive capable of specifying even the type of a medium defect with a small number of read/write operations is disclosed. A read signal is sampled. A defect detector 40 of a read channel IC includes a (1+D) calculation circuit 41 for adding the current and preceding sample values or the absolute values thereof. The two types of sums of the current and preceding samples are compared with a lower reference value and an upper reference value preset in comparators 42, 43, respectively. A portion where the sum of the sample values exceeds the upper reference value is detected as a medium defect due to thermal asperity, a portion where the sum of the absolute values of the sample values is lower than the lower reference value is detected as a medium defect due to a missing, signal and a portion where the sum of the absolute values of the sample values exceeds the upper reference value as a medium effect due to an extra, signal thereby generating a defect detection signal DD. Three types of defects can thus be detected with a single read operation.

    摘要: A position sensitivity adjusting method for a disk apparatus and a disk apparatus using the same for adjusting an AGC (Automatic Gain Control) amplifier for amplifying a servo signal on a servo surface of a disk medium, involves positioning a servo head at a boundary of tracks on the servo surface. The method then includes setting a plurality of different adjustment values in the AGC amplifier, reading two position signals through the servo head for each adjustment value, and calculating a dispersion value of the position signals for each adjustment value. After the adjustment value for the AGC amplifier which provides the minimum dispersion value is acquired from the calculated dispersion values, the acquired adjustment value is set in the AGC amplifier. With the adjusting method, even when offset compensation for positioning the servo head at a track boundary is executed, a positioning error can be prevented.

When an access command is issued that requires sequential data to be accessed on more than one track, an access sequence is followed in which at least two of the top surfaces on different disks of the same cylinder are accessed directly after each other, or, at least two of the bottom surfaces on different disks of the same cylinder are accessed directly after each other.

    摘要: A magnetic disk drive unit includes a first read amplifier connected to an inductive head, a second read amplifier connected to a magneto-resistive head, a selective output unit for selecting either an output of the first read amplifier or an output of the second read amplifier and supplying a selected output to a demodulator, and a control unit for supplying a switching control signal. When reading servo information written onto a data surface of a magnetic recording medium, the control unit controls the switching control signal and thus causes the selective output unit to select an output of the first read amplifier associated with the inductive head. By the constitution, servo information can be detected in a wide range using a relatively simple data-surface servo pattern. This realizes high-precision off-tracking compensation.
