摘要: Methods and associated apparatus to reduce electrical power consumption in an information channel may include identifying times at which to restore power to elements in the information channel, and restoring power to the elements at the identified times. Times for each element are identified based on a recovery time for that element to reach a sufficiently stable operating point before a transition to an active mode of operation. By maximizing the length of time individual elements may stay in the reduced power mode, power savings may be maximized without negatively affecting information channel performance.

摘要: A method for writing servo patterns on at least one disc in a disc drive that has a first set of tracks and a second set of tracks on a major surface of the disc includes stepping between the tracks of the first set of tracks at a first constant angle, and stepping between the tracks of the second set of tracks at a second constant angle. Stepping between tracks in the first group or the second group includes selecting two adjacent tracks from either the first group of tracks or the second group of tracks, and determining the angle through which an actuator assembly must be rotated between the two adjacent tracks selected to produce a selected track pitch. The method produces a disc for a disc drive with a first set of tracks, and a second set of tracks in which the track pitch varies across the set of tracks.

摘要: A method for the adaptive dampening of a peak amplitude of a thermal asperity signal in a disc drive to minimize loss of read data integrity, including the steps of determining a peak-to-peak preamble signal amplitude for identifying an amplitude signal range of the peak amplitude of the thermal asperity signal; measuring the peak amplitude of the thermal asperity signal; separating the peak-to-peak preamble signal amplitude into substantially even portions for use in calculating a value of the amplitude signal range of the peak amplitude of the thermal asperity signal; calculating the value of the amplitude signal range of the peak amplitude of the thermal asperity signal for use in determining a dampening resistance used by a dampening circuit to adaptively dampen the peak amplitude of the thermal asperity signal; and activating the dampening circuit to dampen the peak amplitude of the thermal asperity signal.

摘要: Apparatus for detecting defect in a recordable medium such as a disc drive is disclosed. The apparatus includes a recording system which write and read test data on the medium. The apparatus also includes a first comparator for comparing the read data to a first threshold. A first and a second counter, operably connected to the first comparator, are incremented when the read data exceeds the first threshold. When the first counter obtains a first count value, a first defect signal is produced. Data domains associated with the recordable medium are marked as bad in response to the first defect signal. When the second counter obtains a second count value, a second defect signal is produced and data sectors associated with the recordable medium are marked as bad in response to the second defect signal. A method for detecting defects in a recordable medium is also disclosed.

摘要: A disc drive and a method of storing data using the disc drive are disclosed. Multiple data heads are each supported adjacent a corresponding one of multiple disc surfaces of a disc stack to form multiple head/media combinations. A separate guardband or recording density capability for each of the multiple head/media combinations is determined. An actual recording density is assigned to each of the multiple head/media combinations based upon the recording density capability for the particular head/media combination. The actual recording density assigned to each of the multiple head/media combinations can be different from the actual recording densities assigned to other head/media combinations. The disc drive is controlled such that data is recorded on each of the surfaces at the actual recording density assigned thereto.

摘要: In general, this disclosure describes read recovery techniques for data storage devices that use soft information associated with multiple read operations to detect data. Specifically, the read recovery techniques comprise computing soft information for each bit detected during a first read operation of a data storage medium, computing soft information for each bit detected during a second read operation of the data storage medium and averaging the soft information computed during the first and second read operations to determine the value of each of the bits.

摘要: A data word is error correction encoded to provide a worst case codeword without bit transitions between worst case codeword bits. A modulation bit is calculated as a function of the worst case codeword. The modulation bit has a bit polarity opposite a bit polarity of the worst case codeword bits. The worst case codeword bits are added with the modulation bit to form a modulated code word.
