摘要: A disc drive and a method of storing data using the disc drive are disclosed. Multiple data heads are each supported adjacent a corresponding one of multiple disc surfaces of a disc stack to form multiple head/media combinations. A separate guardband or recording density capability for each of the multiple head/media combinations is determined. An actual recording density is assigned to each of the multiple head/media combinations based upon the recording density capability for the particular head/media combination. The actual recording density assigned to each of the multiple head/media combinations can be different from the actual recording densities assigned to other head/media combinations. The disc drive is controlled such that data is recorded on each of the surfaces at the actual recording density assigned thereto.

摘要: In general, this disclosure describes read recovery techniques for data storage devices that use soft information associated with multiple read operations to detect data. Specifically, the read recovery techniques comprise computing soft information for each bit detected during a first read operation of a data storage medium, computing soft information for each bit detected during a second read operation of the data storage medium and averaging the soft information computed during the first and second read operations to determine the value of each of the bits.

摘要: A data word is error correction encoded to provide a worst case codeword without bit transitions between worst case codeword bits. A modulation bit is calculated as a function of the worst case codeword. The modulation bit has a bit polarity opposite a bit polarity of the worst case codeword bits. The worst case codeword bits are added with the modulation bit to form a modulated code word.

摘要: A method is disclosed for detecting defects in a recordable medium such as a hard disc drive based on error energy. The method may include the steps of writing test data to the medium and reading back the test data. The method may also include the steps of computing an error energy based on the square of the difference between the read back data and an ideal version of the test data and comparing the error energy with an energy threshold. The method generates a defect signal when the error energy exceeds the energy threshold. The method may also be used to identify the media defect according to its error energy profile. An apparatus for detecting defects in a recordable medium is also disclosed.

摘要: A method and apparatus for detecting and recovering from head instability in a magneto-resistive (MR) transducer head of a disc-drive system. A head-instability-recovery circuit is described for use in disc drive to recover from a head-instability condition of an MR transducer head. This circuit includes a controller and a current source that supplies current to the MR head. The current source is controlled to supply a nominal amount of current to the MR head when operating in a normal mode, and to supply one or more current bursts having a current above the nominal supply current in order to recover from the head-instability condition. Also described is a method for recovering from a transducer-instability condition of an MR transducer of a disc drive, including detecting a situation that indicates a head-instability-recovery operation is desired, and performing the head-instability-recovery operation.

摘要: A system, method, and device for sensing temperature during the writing of information onto magnetic media and providing a sufficient write current for that temperature is disclosed. The system comprises a head responsive to a write current for generating a magnetic flux used in writing data onto the magnetic media, a write current source coupled to the head for receiving a write signal and providing write current to the head, and a temperature responsive device coupled to the write current source that senses temperature and provides a write signal whose magnitude is dependent on temperature.
