A method for manufacturing a reader/writer is provided having a substrate with an undercoat formed thereon. A first shield is formed over a portion of the undercoat and a pair of reader leads is formed over the first shield and undercoat. A read sensor is formed between the reader leads and a first pole/second shield is formed over the reader leads. A mid coat is formed over the undercoat and the reader leads. A second pole is formed over and in contact with the mid coat. A lead is formed over the second pole. A pedestal is formed over the reader lead and an overcoat is formed over the second pole and the lead and around the pedestal. A pad is then formed over the pedestal.

A magnetic head is provided that has an extremely small first shield layer and first and second leads of a read head that extend from a magnetoresistive (MR) sensor to first and second pads without any vias therebetween. This is accomplished by patterning the first shield layer into its final shape before the first gap layer and subsequent layers are formed. An alumina mask with a recess at the ABS of the size of the first shield layer is formed followed by forming the first shield layer in the recess. A very thin first gap layer and an optional supplemental first gap layer are then formed, the supplemental first gap layer insulating any potential exposure of the first shield layer at its junction with the alumina layer. After constructing the MR sensor, first and second leads for the MR sensor are constructed from the MR sensor to sites of the first and second pads. Each of these leads may comprise a single thin film or a first thin film which is connected to the MR and extends past a boundary of the first shield layer and a second thin film which overlays the first film and extends from a location slightly spaced from the MR sensor to the first and second pad sites. With this arrangement the leads for the read head extend from the MR sensor to the pad sites without any vias thereby eliminating processing steps. Further, since the size of the shield is not dictated by the size of the initial leads the first shield layer can be much smaller to promote a more robust head.

A method is provided wherein first and second sacrificial layers of a write element in a merged magnetic head are provided on top of a coil material layer, wherein the first sacrificial layer serves as a mask for shaping the coil material layer into a write coil, and the second sacrificial layer is employed for patterning the desired shape of the first sacrificial layer. The second sacrificial layer is shaped by a first reactive ion etching (RIE) step through a spiral opening in a photoresist layer. The result is a spiral-shaped second sacrificial layer that is employed as a mask for a second RIE to etch the first sacrificial layer through a spiral opening in the second sacrificial layer. The remaining spiral-shaped first sacrificial layer is then employed as a mask for ion milling the coil material layer through a spiral opening in the first sacrificial layer resulting in a write coil with a submicron pitch and sloping edges, which together increase a width of the base of the coil for increased current inducting capability.

A low inductance magnetic write head is provided with first and second pole piece layers that have first ends separated by a write gap layer and second ends connected together at a back gap. An insulation stack is provided which is sandwiched between the first and second pole piece layers. A write coil layer and a second coil layer are provided wherein each coil layer has inner and outer ends. The coil layers wind in the same direction from their inner ends to their outer ends. Each of the coil layers has first and second layer portions. The first layer portion of the write coil layer is embedded in the insulation stack. The second pole piece layer is sandwiched between the first portion of the write coil and a non-magnetic layer and the first non-magnetic layer is sandwiched between the second pole piece layer and the first portion of the second coil layer. The inner ends of the coil layers are electrically connected and the outer ends of the coil layers are electrically connected to a write current source so that when the write current source is introduced write fluxes from the coil layers are in opposition. The first layer portion of the second coil layer has a turn density that is less than a turn density of the first layer portion of the write coil layer.

A monitoring apparatus is provided for determining permeabilities of a vacuum-deposited second pole piece of a magnetic head at the wafer level by providing wafer-mounted monitors which have layers formed by the same masking and deposition steps employed in making the magnetic heads so that the layers of the monitors are replicated layers, except for a shaping layer on top of a replicated second pole piece of some of the monitors. Each monitor is a transformer wherein each of a primary winding and a secondary winding comprises essentially a replicated magnetic head. The first and second pole pieces of the replicated magnetic heads are joined so as to magnetically couple the primary and secondary windings that constitute the transformer. The replicated shaping layer is omitted in part to expose a portion of one of the replicated second pole pieces of a monitor, such as the front slope, the back slope or the yoke portion of the replicated second pole piece which corresponds to the front slope, the back slope or yoke respectively of the magnetic head. When a current is conducted through the replicated coils of the monitor a voltage reading can be taken to indicate the permeability of the exposed portion of the replicated second pole piece of the monitor.

The additional flux from the auxiliary pole, which is injected non-parallel to the primary magnetization of the write pole, exerts a relatively large torque on the magnetization of the write pole, thereby facilitating magnetization reversal of the write pole. Electrical circuitry is connected to the main coil and the auxiliary coil to generate the auxiliary flux simultaneous with the switching of the magnetization of the write pole.

A portion of a shield layer is deposited to form the shunt between the first and second leads to span the gap therebetween and form a shunted assembly. The shunted assembly and component are lapped to form the ABS at the location of the component, a sacrificial carbon overcoat is deposited on the ABS, and additional processing is performed on the shunted assembly. A portion of the shunted assembly, the shunt, and portions of the sacrificial carbon overcoat are then removed to form an electrical open for an unshunted assembly having ABS features comprising an air bearing cavity/deep gap at a former location of the shunted assembly.

Embodiments of the invention provide methods, systems and apparatus for testing electronic components, and more specifically for testing magnetoresistive heads. A pair of top shield pads and a pair of bottom shield pads may be formed in a kerf region of a wafer on which magnetoresistive heads are formed. The top shield pads, bottom shield pads, and a magnetoresistive head may form a circuit that may be coupled with a testing circuit to exchange test signals configured to test the magnetic head. The pair of bottom shield pads may provide balanced impedance to substrate that nullifies the effects of broadband noise.
