Abstract: A method of active-dimming control for augmented-reality glasses. The method includes, while a user is wearing augmented-reality glasses, obtaining a first set of light information measured via a first sensor on the augmented reality glasses which is positioned to receive light after it travels through a dimmable element of the augmented-reality glasses. The method further includes obtaining a second set of light information measured via a second sensor on the augmented reality glasses positioned to receive light that has not travelled through the dimmable element of the augmented-reality glasses. The method further includes electronically adjusting a dimming level of the dimmable element based on a comparison between the first set and second set of light information.

Abstract: A display cell of the subject technology includes two electrodes electrically coupled with a voltage supply, two alignment layers formed over surfaces of the two electrodes, and a liquid crystal (LC) material layer embedded between the two alignment layers. The alignment layers includes grooves and molecules of the LC material layer that are enabled to align along the grooves when no voltage is applied to the two electrodes. The two alignment layers include a polymer formed with a combination of an electron-donor monomer and an electron-acceptor monomer.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a computing device may determine a virtual content to be displayed with a scene of a real-world environment. The device may generate an image depicting the virtual content. Using one or more sensors, the device may detect characteristics of the scene of the real-world environment. Based on the image and the characteristics of the scene, the device may determine that a visual enhancement is to be applied to the virtual content depicted in the image to enhance a contrast between the depicted virtual content and the scene. The device may generate a visually-enhanced image depicting the virtual content by applying the visual enhancement to the virtual content depicted in the image. The device may display the visually-enhanced image of the virtual content on a display of the computing device, wherein the scene of the real-world environment is visible through the display.

Abstract: A device includes a display including multiple pixels, each pixel having an optical emitter to provide at least one light beam from an image. The device also includes an optical element to relay light beams from the display to a viewer through an eyebox, the eyebox limiting an area that includes a pupil of the viewer and a varifocal assembly to direct, through the eyebox, light beams having a first and second mutually orthogonal polarization states, according to a desired mode of operation of the device, and associated with a first and second field of view of the image in a focused mode of operation of the device, and an immersive mode of operation of the device, respectively. A memory storing instructions and a processor to execute the instructions to cause the device to perform a method for adjusting between the immersive mode and the focused mode are also provided.

Abstract: A device includes a polarization rotator configured to be switchable between operating in two switching states. Abstract: A display device for projecting light to a viewer may include (1) a plurality of subpixels, in which subpixels may emit light of differing spectral distributions, (2) at least one light deviator disposed optically downstream from the plurality of subpixels, and (3) and a controller. The light emitted from each of the plurality of subpixels may be transmitted through and laterally shifted by the least one light deviator towards a viewer and the at least one light deviator may be mechanically rotatable by a force applied to an outer circumferential region of the at least one light deviator. The controller may control illumination of at least a subset of the plurality of subpixels in synchronization with rotation of the at least one light deviator.
