摘要: Provided is a read signal offset during write verify which prevents the false detection of amorphous pips from an optical disk recorder. Amorphous pips are the signals caused by the drop in reflection from an optical disk after the laser has caused the surface material to change from its crystalline state to an amorphous state, but not to a hole. When a hole is not formed in the material, the amorphous material later recrystallizes, the drop in reflection no longer occurs and information is lost.

    摘要: An information-transmission system including an encoder for converting n-bit information words (D7, . . . , D0) into transmitted m-bit code words (C10, . . . , C0), and a decoder which reconverts the received code words (C'10, . . . , C'0) into information words (D*7, . . . , D*0) corresponding to the original information words. For a first group the encoder converts a first portion (D7, . . . , D3) into a first portion of a code word, such portion comprising q bits (C10, . . . , C5) thereof; and converts a second portion (D2, . . . , D0) of the information word into a second portion of the code word, such portion comprising s bits (C4, . . . , C0) thereof. For a second group the encoder converts a first portion (D7, . . . , D3) into a second portion comprising q bits (C'5, . . . , C'0) of a code word, and converts a second portion (D2, . . . , D0) of the information word into a first portion comprising s-bits of (C'10, . . . , C'6) such code word. The decoder reconverts a received code word by converting the first portion of such code word (C'10, . . . , C'5) into the first portion (D*7, . . . , D*3) of the information word to be reconverted therefrom; and converts the second portion of such code word (C'4, . . . , C'0) into the second portion of such information word (D*2, . . . , D*0). The decoder converts a received code word in the second group of information words by converting the first portion of such code word (C'5, . . . , C'0) into the second portion (D*7, . . . , D*3) of the information word to be reconverted, and converts the second portion of such code word (C'10, . . . , C'6) into the first portion of such information word (D*2, . . . , D*0).

摘要: For the purpose of providing sector-address information on optical disks, a robust header is realized by utilizing a very simple encoding method that allows asynchronous reading. In order to provide robustness and reliability, the header uses a biphase data format to encode addressing information. The embossed header is further configured with redundant address-fields in a checkerboard pattern between adjacent tracks, in order to provide robustness for media-contamination. Each address-field starts with a unique address-mark and ends with parity-check information to provide reliable error-detection. The entire header can be decoded without the need for a slice-level, thus making it very tolerant to amplitude-variations and DC-offset variations. By combining these characteristics, a header is achieved which is reliable and inherently resistant to failures in providing sector-address information on optical disks.

摘要: An optical recording medium having a number of adjacent tracks for storing digital optical information is provided, such as an optical disc. The tracks extend in a tangential direction, for example, surrounding the center of the disc. Each track is separated by a pitch amount in a radial direction, for example, outward from the center across the tracks. The tracks each have a servo field comprising one tracking mark located on the track in one of four discrete tangential positions A, B, C and D on the track. There is a mark in one of these four positions for every four adjacent tracks on the media. The position of the tracking marks repeat in the same sequence for every four adjacent tracks. For any four such adjacent tracks, the tracks having marks at positions A and B are separated by one track, and tracks having marks at positions C and D are separated by one track.

摘要: A method and apparatus for recovering data from an optical read channel provides for improved recording density by tolerating lower phase and amplitude margins. The method includes digitizing a plurality of samples of a first signal, clipping the digitized samples of the first signal, digitally differentiating the clipped digitized samples, determining the relative locations of signal polarity changes, and generating logical values for channel bits based, at least in part, on the relative locations of signal polarity changes. The apparatus for recovering data from an optical read channel includes a signal-level limiter, a digital differentiator coupled to the signal-level limiter, a min/max detector coupled to the digital differentiator, a zero-crossing detector coupled to the digital differentiator, an update signal generator coupled to the zero-crossing detector and the min/max detector, and a channel bit transition generator.

摘要: An optical disk recording system including a record medium is disclosed for providing an accurate track crossing count and an accurate track following signal. A first embodiment utilizes off-centered wobbled areas located in the headers of the record medium. The high frequency content of a first signal is combined with the low frequency content of a second signal, which is generated using the wobbled areas. In another embodiment, light-reflective discontinuities are provided in the header areas of the record medium. A qualifier and an AGC are utilized in providing a corrected track following signal. In still another embodiment, reflective discontinuities are located in the servo areas of the record medium. In such an embodiment, it is preferred that there is a fixed gain adjustment to a radial push-pull signal. With regard to each of the three aforesaid embodiments, a track following signal is corrected to compensate for aberrations that are caused by a shift of the light beam returned from the record medium surface. In yet another embodiment, the track following signal is generated using only the central aperture or wobble signal. In this embodiment, it is preferred that three pits be utilized in connection with the track following operation. The three pits are provided in two servo bytes of information located in the servo areas. Two of the three pits are wobble pits and the third pit is used in clocking.

摘要: Disclosed is an apparatus for detection of write protect data written on an optical disk by simultaneously reading the data during writing using differential detection and disabling further writing if write protect data is present. The write protect data is the same format as other data written on the optical disk and is written as the first byte of data on all data fields. The data is written in a fixed-block format defining a symbol having a predetermined number of symbol positions and a predetermined number of holes which may be written at the symbol positions, an equal number of holes at odd and at even positions. The write protect symbol has holes written at symbol position numbers two and five. During the writing of a write protect symbol, the laser is operated at read power before it is operated at write power and a signal associated with the hole associated power of the reflected beam is sampled at position number eight of the previous symbol and at position number one of the write protect symbol. The hole associated power at position number one will be significant if a hole was previously written at position number two. The read signals at positions one and eight are compared to each other. If the position number one signal exceeds that at number eight by a predetermined differential, a hole was previously recorded at position number two, indicating the presence of a previously written write protect byte of data. The same apparatus is also used to detect the presence of or absence of data in a data sector during read mode.

摘要: Disclosed is an apparatus for verifying data written on an optical disk by simultaneously reading the data during writing and using differential detection to verify that the data has been written correctly. The data is written in a fixed-block format defining a symbol having a predetermined number of symbol positions and a predetermined number of holes which may be written in the symbol positions, an equal number of holes in the odd positions and in the even positions. In this regard, the holes written in the odd positions are independently verified from the holes written in the even positions. Immediately after the laser has been operated at write power, it is returned to read power and a signal associated with the hole associated power of the reflected beam is sampled. This signal is compared to the signal power generated at the previous even or odd position. The highest signal is retained and compared to the next even or odd position's signal. At the end of the symbol, the location of the even and odd symbol positions having the highest signal power is determined and compared to the location of the write pulse to determine whether the location of the hole corresponds with the location of the write pulse.
