摘要: In order to provide a low noise laser beam, a noise reducing feedback network is provided which creates a noise reducing signal and provides that signal to the laser itself. In order to produce the noise reducing signal, the operation of the laser is monitored and the feedback signal is a direct result of this monitoring. Monitoring is accomplished by a fast-forward sense detector, which receives a portion of the laser beam from the operating laser. The output from this fast-forward sense detector is provided to an amplifier which inverts and amplifies the signal. A noise reduction feedback network then receives the amplified signal, appropriately filters this signal, and provides it to the laser itself so as to reduce noise in the laser-beam for the frequency band of importance for reading the recorded data from the optical medium. The noise reduction feedback signal further has sufficiently high impedance so as to not disturb the traditional CW operation of the laser and to avoid interference with the traditional RF modulation of the laser.

摘要: An optically readable record carrier for storing digitally coded information having a power spectrum with a substantially zero level at a predetermined frequency. The information is recorded on and/or reproduced from substantially parallel elongated tracks on the record carrier which have a periodic undulation at the aforesaid predetermined frequency. Such undulation generates a clock signal for synchronizing the recording and/or reproduction of the digitally encoded information on the tracks, and does not interfere with the recording or reproduction of such information. Apparatus is disclosed for forming such tracks on the record carrier.

摘要: An optical disk recording system including a record medium is disclosed for providing an accurate track crossing count and an accurate track following signal. A first embodiment utilizes off-centered wobbled areas located in the headers of the record medium. The high frequency content of a first signal is combined with the low frequency content of a second signal, which is generated using the wobbled areas. In another embodiment, light-reflective discontinuities are provided in the header areas of the record medium. A qualifier and an AGC are utilized in providing a corrected track following signal. In still another embodiment, reflective discontinuities are located in the servo areas of the record medium. In such an embodiment, it is preferred that there is a fixed gain adjustment to a radial push-pull signal. With regard to each of the three aforesaid embodiments, a track following signal is corrected to compensate for aberrations that are caused by a shift of the light beam returned from the record medium surface. In yet another embodiment, the track following signal is generated using only the central aperture or wobble signal. In this embodiment, it is preferred that three pits be utilized in connection with the track following operation. The three pits are provided in two servo bytes of information located in the servo areas. Two of the three bits are wobble pits and the third pit is used in clocking.

摘要: The recording surface of an optical record carrier (1) is divided into a succession of first (A) and second (B) annular zones, each including a plurality of substantially concentric information tracks. The tracks in each zone (A) include radially aligned first control words (13) and the tracks in the annular zones (B) include radially aligned second control words (14), the structures of the first and second control words being distinguishable from each other. An optical scanning device projects a beam which as it scans the tracks reads the control words and a detection circuit generates a measurement signal V.sub.m upon each passage of the beam from one zone to another. The measurement signal can be utilized to rapidly address the scanning beam to any of the annular zones.

摘要: During recording or reading of data in an optical record carrier such as a disc, focus is optimized by adding a focus offset signal to the focus servo error signal. Each frame contains pre-formatted control marks in a servo field, and reference data marks recorded there at a time of data recording. The focus offset signal is optimized by spacing the reference data marks a distance as close as any data marks between which a zero or non-recorded position must be resolved, and taking samples of the optical readout signal as the optical scanning beam passes over or adjacent the reference marks. Four samples are used, taken between the peaks of the signal corresponding to the two reference data marks.

摘要: The present invention provides a track format for an optical record carrier that is useful in producing a tracking signal with a substantially constant slope at its zero-crossing point for a range of track pitches. The preferred embodiment of track format is also useful in producing a tracking signal that has a substantially constant amplitude over a range of track pitches. The track format, in the preferred embodiment, employs wobbled pits. The sequence in which the wobbled pits occur alternates between adjacent tracks and the offset of the wobbled pits with respect to the center line of a track remain constant regardless of the track pitch. The preferred embodiment of the track format also includes a reference pit that is used to establish the threshold detection level for the read electronics. The location of the reference alternates between tracks to reduce the effect of radial interference on the signal produced using the reference pit and thereby allow an optimal threshold level to be established.

摘要: An optical information recording and/or read system comprises an optically readable record carrier (1) and an optical read and/or recording apparatus (FIG. 2). The record carrier (1) is provided with substantially concentric tracks (2). The record carrier (1) is divided into sectors (4). In the tracks of each sector address information is recorded by means of prior recorded radially juxtaposed address information patterns (8). The read and/or recording apparatus (FIG. 2) comprises a driver (20, 21) for rotating the record carrier (1), scanner (23, 25) for scanning the tracks (3) with a radiation beam (2) for the purpose of recording and/or reading, a closed-loop tracking system (23, 26) for keeping the radiation beam (24) aimed at the track (6) to be scanned, and an angular-position-detection system (23, 26, 27) for determining the angular position of the record carrier (1). The recording and/or read apparatus determine eccentricity-error (23, 26, 27, 50) by deriving a correction signal (Vc) from the sector addresses read while the tracking system is inoperative which correction signal is related to the radial displacement of the point of incidence of the radiation beam (24) of the record carrier (1) as a result of an eccentric position of the center of rotation (22) and out-of-roundness of the information tracks. When the tracking system is operative the correction signal (Vc) is employed as a control signal for an open-loop control system to compensate for the radial error caused by eccentricity and out-of-roundness.

摘要: A set of high density codes for optical recording of binary data. The data bits of each set are encoded into a block code having a plurality of symbols, each symbol having a plurality of symbol position with an even number of holes with the constraint that there be at least two symbol positions between holes or groups of holes. Additionally, a least one hole is never recorded at a predetermined boundary symbol position. This "empty" symbol position permits symbol position dimensions to be reduced while maintaining good read margins to provide high density recording.
