An apparatus and a method for controlling discoverability are disclosed. The solution includes obtaining information of at least one scan on at least one communication channel and selecting a discovery mode for an access point from at least two different modes on the basis of the information.

An approach is provided for locating communities over an ad-hoc mesh network. Community identifiers are used to locate communities and community members over an ad-hoc mesh network. The community identifiers are also associated with keys to authenticate members of the community and to protect the privacy and anonymity of information exchanged between the members.

According to an aspect, a method comprises as performed by an apparatus of a first wireless network: detecting a first transmission from a first apparatus of a second wireless network different from the first wireless network; transmitting, to a second apparatus of the first wireless network, a transmission mode request, wherein the transmission mode request indicates a request to transmit from the apparatus to the second apparatus at least during an interframe space of a transmission opportunity between the first apparatus and another apparatus of the second wireless network, receiving a transmission mode response from the second apparatus, wherein the transmission mode response indicates acceptance of the request; in response to detecting a second transmission from the first apparatus, transmitting a data frame during an interframe space following the second transmission.

A method of communicating between nodes on a plurality of channels within the unlicensed spectrum is disclosed where coordination of the acquiring of the different channels is provided so that a further channel is acquired prior to the occupancy time of the currently used channel expiring. The method involves determining at one node that a channel in the unlicensed band has been acquired for a predetermined occupancy time. Initiating a scan of at least one further channel within the unlicensed spectrum to determine if a further channel is available. Once a predetermined time has passed and within the predetermined occupancy time, acquiring the available channel by transmitting a signal on it.

This document describes a solution for sensing a location by using a wireless network. According to an aspect, a method for an access node of the wireless network comprises: receiving, by the access node from a wireless device at a location, a channel measurement signal; determining, by the access node, precoding coefficients for the location based on the channel measurement signal; storing, by the access node, the precoding coefficients as linked to the location; and utilizing, by the access node, the preceding coefficients to acquire information on the location.

In a method for low-power wireless communication, a primary connectivity radio transmits a wake-up radio configuration request to a wireless device and receives a wireless wake-up configuration response comprising a wake-up identifier for distance aware wake-up notification mode. A companion low-power wake-up radio receives from the wireless device, a wireless wake-up radio measurement reference for which it measures a receive signal strength, determines it as a reference level, and associates the reference level with the wake-up identifier. The wake-up radio then receives from the wireless device, a wake-up frame that includes a received wake-up identifier. The wake-up radio determines that the received wake-up identifier compares with the wake-up identifier associated with the reference level. The wake-up radio measures a receive signal strength of the wireless wake-up frame and wakes-up the primary connectivity radio, if the receive signal strength of the wireless wake-up frame is above the reference level.

This document discloses a solution for carrying out narrowband communications in a wireless network. According to an aspect, a method comprises in an apparatus: detecting at least one content notification message indicating contents of each of a plurality of messages frequency-multiplexed with a discovery message to parallel sub-channels of a channel in a bi-directional wireless network; selecting autonomously a sub-channel on the basis of the detected content notification message; and acquiring a message through the selected sub-channel.

A solution for selecting a network discovery method in an apparatus. The apparatus performs the following: performing initial channel assessment of a radio channel at maximum a determined time period shorter than or equal to the shortest of a plurality of discovery frame broadcast periodicities employed by access nodes the apparatus is configured to search for in network discovery; upon determining that a transmission has been detected in the initial channel assessment, selecting a network discovery according to a first network discovery method; and upon detecting no transmission on the radio channel during the initial channel assessment, selecting network discovery according to a second network discovery method different from the first network discovery method.

According to an aspect, a method including: detecting, by a first apparatus of a first wireless network on the basis of a first criterion, that transmissions performed simultaneously with a second apparatus of a second wireless network are allowed; determining, on the basis of a second criterion different from the first criterion, to prohibit frame transmissions simultaneous with frame transmissions of the second apparatus; upon the determining, causing transmission of a control message in the first wireless network, wherein the control message includes an instruction to refrain from transmissions simultaneously with the second apparatus.

An apparatus and a method for determining distances between apparatuses are disclosed. The method in a first apparatus includes joining a network including a set of apparatuses; setting a first predetermined operating mode for the first apparatus after joining the network; receiving from at least one second apparatus belonging to the net-work a message indicating a support for a ranging service from the second apparatus. As a response to the message, a ranging process with the second apparatus is initiated. A second predetermined operating mode is set for the first apparatus after completing the ranging process with the second apparatus network; and a range-limited service discovery frame is broadcast.
