An improved method of network management, particularly in the context of standards IEEE802.11 and IEEE802.11k, through two new MAC measurements, with attendant advantages. The two new measurements include WTRU uplink traffic loading measurement, and an AP service loading measurement and is generally applicable at least to layers 1 and 2 as applied to a least 802.11k in the context of OFDM and CDMA 2000 systems, but is applicable to other scenarios as well. A Method for determining and advertising congestion is also provided for a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) system. The present invention also introduces a method for managing congestion when congestion is detected. This aspect of the present invention applies primarily to wireless systems that use the Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) mechanism. The methods are advantageously implemented in selectively configured WTRUs of various forms.

The reselection message is generated in response to the request and includes: at least one first identifier of one or more candidate basic service sets (BSSs) that may be considered for reselection; a preference indicator associated with each candidate BSS, to indicate the BSS selection preference; an expiration time indicator associated with each candidate BSS, to indicate a time period that the BSS may be considered for reselection; an indication of a measurement to be taken on a BSS and used in a target BSS reselection determination; and a margin by which the measurement must exceed a corresponding value for a currently selected BSS. A method and system for performing peer-to-peer wireless communication between stations (STAs) within a basic service set (BSS) while maintaining connectivity with an access point (AP) in the BSS are disclosed. A source STA, an AP and a destination STA negotiate a direct link setup (DLS) channel for performing peer-to-peer communication between the source STA and the destination STA. The DLS channel may be different from a BSS channel used for communication between the AP and each of the STAs. The source STA and the destination STA then perform peer-to-peer communication on the negotiated DLS channel.

A method and system for autonomous channel coordination for a wireless distribution system (WDS) are disclosed. A wireless communication system includes a plurality of access points (APs) and the APs communicate each other via a WDS. A coordinated channel group (CCG) of a plurality of member APs is established. The member APs of the CCG camp on a WDS channel used for the WDS among the member APs of the CCG. One AP among the member APs of the CCG is designated as a master AP. The master AP coordinates with other member APs of the CCG for selecting and configuring the WDS channel for the CCG and addition and deletion of member APs. By allowing APs to define a CCG, changes of the WDS channel are performed autonomously while maintaining connectivity.

The CM sends a channel change intention message to at least one of the MPs indicating the CM's intention to change from a first channel to a second channel. Upon reception of the channel change intention message, the at least one MP determines whether to switch from the first channel to the second channel. The at least one MP sends a channel change response message to the CM. The CM then determines whether to change from the first channel to the second channel based on the channel change response message. The channel change intention message may indicate a change of mode, a change of bandwidth or a change of a number of channels. The channel change intention message may indicate the timing of the channel change.
