摘要:
A framework of a common mobility management protocol for Q.5/16 (Mobility for Multimedia Systems/Applications and Services) comprises a high level protocol for performing the functions of address resolution, routing, location update and authentication. The common mobility management protocol can be used by all existent and future multimedia applications (MA's) to support mobility management for messaging among mobility management authentication function (AuF), home location function (HLF) and visitor location function (VLF) databases/servers, and the corresponding multimedia application functional entities (MAFEs) of the multimedia applications (MA's). The common mobility management protocol may replace, act in concert with or in sequence with existent interworking protocols for the various multimedia applications. Reference point architectures, functional characteristics, features, and capabilities of the protocol are described including call flows and message syntax. In addition, the scope of Q.5/16 and how H.MMS.1 (H.323 Mobility), H.MMS.2 (Global Mobility), and H.MMS.3 (Presence/Instant Messaging Mobility) can be a part of the same common mobility management protocol have also been presented.

The invention provides an apparatus and method that allows the operator of each user device participating in a multimedia conference to selectively receive information services during the multimedia conference. The apparatus includes a controller for receiving start-up signals from a user device, sending start-up requests to destination user devices, and receiving start-up signals from the destination user devices. The start-up signals may include information as to whether each user device requests information services to be provided during the multimedia conference. The controller establishes the multimedia conference and selectively provides the information services to the respective user devices. The information services are provided continuously or non-continuously at the preference of the user devices. The information services may also be provided in various formats at the preference of the user devices.

The present invention provides an intelligent signaling scheme for a computer-readable medium for an H.323-based mobility architecture for real-time mobile multimedia communications and conferencing over packet-based networks. The steps for the scheme include: (1) upon becoming mobile and initiating an H.323 communication that includes at least one of: audio, video and data, by the Mobile Entity, with respect to notification, one of providing, by at least one of a plurality of available H.323 Home/Foreign Mobility Gatekeepers, notification of H.323 mobility services availability by periodically broadcasting, multicasting or unicasting a Mobility Gatekeeper Advertisement with a multicast/unicast address; and where the Mobile Entity lacks notification of H.323 mobility services availability, broadcasting, multicasting, unicasting or sending, by the Mobile Entity, a message to the Home Gatekeeper or Home Location Database, which notifies H.323 Home/Foreign Mobility Gatekeepers in a preselected area local to the Mobile Entity that the Mobile Entity needs H.323 mobility services and notifying, by the H.323 Home/Foreign Mobility Gatekeepers, the Mobile Entity of available H.323 Home/Foreign Mobility Gatekeepers; (2) registering, by the Mobile Entity, with a H.323 Home/Foreign Mobility Gatekeeper of the available H.323 Home/Foreign Mobility Gatekeepers that support H.323 mobility services in a Location Area, Cell or Zone of the Mobile Entity; and (3) providing, for the Mobile Terminal, Node or Entity by the H.323 Home/Foreign Mobility Gatekeeper with which the Mobile Entity is registered, support for the H.323 communication that includes at least one of: audio, video and data.

An apparatus and method for providing multimedia conferencing services with selective performance parameters delivers a different representation of the same video signals to each of a plurality of users depending on the hardware limitations, software limitations, network limitations, and user preferences of each user device. Thus, each user can choose the quality of service he/she wants to receive in view of system limitations and cost considerations. The quality of service may be defined in terms of bandwidth, jitter, frame rate, and delay, for example. The apparatus includes a multimedia bridge that receives video signals from at least one of the plurality of users. The multimedia bridge scales-down the video signals as necessary before sending the video signals to the end users. The multimedia bridge also detects congestion occurring during the multimedia conference and scales-down the video signals, if necessary, to meet reduced network availability. In addition, the multimedia bridge accommodates changes in user preferences occurring during the multimedia conference and adjusts the video signals as necessary.

A technique for providing real-time multimedia conferencing services with guaranteed performance, in a hybrid networking environment, by interconnecting cable modem-based premises networks via hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) access networks and an ATM wide area network is disclosed. A functional design constitutes both component and protocol architecture of an ATM cable modem for both premises networks and headend stations. The ATM wide area network may be divided into a plurality of access network domains and one backbone network domain to provide efficient and intelligent multimedia conferencing services. Each ATM access network domain has one cable modem server as well as access multimedia bridge server, while there is only one central network server and one central multimedia bridge server within the backbone network domain. Each cable modem server located in an ATM access network domain maintains necessary information of how the bandwidth of the cable network is being used by existing calls, and how the cable bandwidth will be allocated when new multimedia conference calls are initiated, in accordance with the desired priority and performance levels. If all conference participants are connected to the same ATM access network domain, the access multimedia bridge server of that domain will provide bridging, otherwise the central multimedia bridge will provide bridging. An integrated call control algorithm and cable modem control and signaling protocol scheme has been developed to set up multimedia conference calls that guarantee bandwidth over the cable access network as well within the wide area ATM network.

A technique for providing real-time multimedia conferencing services with guaranteed performance, in a hybrid networking environment, by interconnecting ADSL modem-based premises networks via ADSL access networks and an ATM wide area network is disclosed. If all conference participants are connected to the same ATM access network domain, the access multimedia bridge server of that domain will provide bridging, otherwise the central multimedia bridge will provide bridging. An integrated call control algorithm and cable modem control and signaling protocol scheme has been developed to set up multimedia conference calls that guarantee bandwidth over the ADSL access network as well within the wide area ATM network.

An interworking function (IWF) for a first and second protocol based network, for example, an H.323 protocol based network and an SIP protocol based network comprises an interworking gateway server including a state machine for defining each call processing state and a translation table for use in translating addresses formatted in each protocol. A method of interworking for use in interworking between said first protocol based network and said second protocol based network comprises the steps of receiving at said interworking gateway server serving said first and second protocol based networks a request from an endpoint in the first or second protocol based networks, establishing a state machine in memory whereby, for each state of said state machine, a message associated with that state is categorized as one of a triggering message, a non-triggering message and an error message, establishing a translation table in said memory whereby an address formatted in said first protocol has a one-for-one correspondence with an address formatted in said second protocol, processing said request in accordance with said translation table and said state machine and permitting communication between said first and second endpoints utilizing a realtime transport protocol. In the event media is terminated at said interworking gateway server, the interworking gateway server, in one embodiment, comprises a media switching fabric for switching media terminated at the gateway to an addressed endpoint capable of receiving it.

A customer premises border element is disclosed that functions as an interface between devices, such as SIP devices located on a customer's premises, and a border element located in the service provider's network. Such customer premises border elements are advantageous in that they are relatively inexpensive since they only have to support devices located on the customer's premises. At the same time, by performing a number of functions, such as media transcoding and a portion of call processing, it reduces the processing requirements of network border elements.
