    摘要: A packet is received via a port of the network device, and a database lookup is performed using header information of the packet. A priority associated with the packet is determined, and it is determined whether the priority is associated with a particular communication protocol that provides guaranteed delivery, defined latency, and/or defined throughput. When it is determined that the priority is associated with the particular communication protocol, i) it is determined, based on the database lookup, whether a destination address (DA) of the packet is associated with the particular communication protocol, and ii) when it is determined that the DA of the packet is associated with the particular communication protocol, the packet is prevented from egressing from ports of the network device that are operating according to the particular communication protocol with a frame priority indicator corresponding to a value reserved for the particular communication protocol.

Each ATM access network domain has one cable modem server as well as access multimedia bridge server. There is only one central network server and one central multimedia bridge server within the backbone network domain. Each cable modem server located in an ATM access network domain maintains necessary information of how the cable network bandwidth is used by existing calls, and will be allocated when new multimedia conference calls are initiated, in accordance with desired priority and performance levels.

    摘要: An AAL2/SSCS packet voice system multiplexes various forms of voice-band traffic including voice packets, fax packets, and data packets into a virtual circuit (VC). This AAL2/SSCS packet voice system executes a dynamic call admission algorithm that takes into account call type in deciding whether to admit a new call to the VC. In particular, this approach takes into account different bandwidth needs for different call types. The AAL2/SSCS packet voice system also performs bit or block dropping on voice packets to mitigate the effects of traffic congestion. The bit or block dropping is done based on the packet queue fill value exceeding at least one queue threshold. Further, the AAL2/SSCS packet voice system also dynamically varies a queue threshold as a function of capacity.

    摘要: Data cells of plural classes are transferred from input ports to output ports through a switch by storing the cells at each input port in class-specific virtual output queues (VOQ) within sets of VOQs associated with output ports, and providing credits to VOQs according to class-associated guaranteed bandwidths. When a cell is received at a VOQ having credits, a high-priority request for transfer is generated. If a cell is received at a VOQ that does not have any available credits, a low-priority request for transfer is generated. In response to requests, grants are issued to VOQ sets without regard to class, high-priority requests being favored over low-priority requests. When a grant is received for a particular VOQ set, an arbitrator selects a VOQ from the set, giving priority to VOQs having credits over VOQs without credits, and a cell from the selected VOQ is transferred. Requests generated from all input ports are forwarded to a central scheduler associated with a switch fabric slice, the central scheduler issuing the grants. The switch fabric may comprise multiple slices and a central scheduler, across which requests may be distributed in parallel, for example, the switch fabric slices being selected in a fixed order. While all high-priority requests are granted, low priority requests may be granted by the central scheduler according to a weighted fair share policy.

In the case where a QoS (Quality of Service) specified connection request occurs, an estimated bandwidth is calculated which is to be assigned to an existing QoS-unspecified traffic on the link associated with the QoS-specified connection request. A call control processor of the ATM switch determines whether the QoS-specified connection request is accepted, depending on whether a requested bandwidth is smaller than an available bandwidth that is obtained by subtracting an assigned bandwidth and the estimated bandwidth from a full bandwidth of the link.

    摘要: Data flows generated in accordance with a connected mode protocol and formatted in packets in accordance with a non-connected mode protocol are transmitted via an ATM network. A set of virtual circuits of the ATM network is assigned in advance to each pair of access points of the ATM network, without allocating transmission rate resources to them. When an access point receives a request, formulated in accordance with the connected mode protocol, to establish a connection between a source address and a destination address accessible via another access point of the ATM network, an available virtual circuit is selected from the set assigned to this pair of access points and a resource management cell containing a request to activate the virtual circuit is transmitted on the selected virtual circuit. When this cell is received by a node of the ATM network located on the selected virtual circuit, a transmission rate resource is allocated, if it is available, to the selected virtual circuit.

    摘要: A managed private network (“MPN”) system for interconnecting enterprise entities to subscriber entities. The MPN system uses the ATM protocol and segregates data for an enterprise on to virtual connections dedicated to the enterprise. Each enterprise may have a single connection to the MPN system. The MPN system may forward data to various service providers through which subscriber entities may be connected to the MPN system. Thus, the enterprise entities need not have a separate physical connection to each service provider. Also, the MPN system can offer services (e.g., archival storage) to the enterprise entities. The MPN system ensures that data for one enterprise will not be intermingled with the data of another enterprise.
