Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for preparing an aqueous dispersion of acrylate-siloxane copolymer particles as described herein. The polymer particles comprise structural units of an acrylate monomer; an acid monomer; and a siloxane acrylate monomer of formula I: where R, R1, R2, Y and x are as defined herein. The method provides an efficient way to prepare a high solids content aqueous dispersion of siloxane-acrylate hybrid copolymers with efficient incorporation of siloxane acrylate monomers, low residual monomer, and low generation of unwanted coagulum. The dispersion is useful for forming coatings with improved hydrophobicity, stain resistance, and aesthetic/haptic properties compared with conventional all-acrylic compositions.

Abstract: A polymer blend is provided comprising: a single stage polymer and a silicone-grafted vinyl copolymer; wherein the single stage polymer comprises: structural units of a monoethylenically unsaturated non-ionic monomer; structural units of a monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer; and structural units of a multiethylenically unsaturated monomer having at least two ethylenically unsaturated groups per molecule; and wherein the silicone-grafted vinyl copolymer, comprises: structural units of a vinyl monomer; and structural units of a carbosiloxane dendrimer of formula (I). Also provided is a suncare formulation comprising the polymer blend in a dermatologically acceptable carrier with a suncare active.

Abstract: Provided are skin care compositions that are useful as SPF and UV absorption boosters in formulations containing inorganic metal oxides. The compositions comprise (a) 0.1 to 20 weight % inorganic metal oxide particles, based on the weight of the composition, (b) 0.1 to 15 weight % copolymer particles dispersed in an aqueous medium, wherein the copolymer particles comprise polymerized units derived from (i) 0.1 to 20 weight % of phosphorus acid monomers, and (ii) 80 to 99.9 weight % of comonomers, (c) 0.1 to 35 weight % silicone fluid, based on the total weight of the composition, and (d) a dermatologically acceptable carrier. Also provided are methods of protecting skin from UVA and UVB damage comprising topically administering such compositions to the skin, and methods of boosting the SPF or UV absorption of a sunscreen composition containing inorganic metal oxide particles comprising including such copolymer particles in the composition.

Also provided are methods for lightening skin tone comprising topically administering such compositions to the skin, and methods for improving visible light scattering of a composition including a pigment grade inorganic metal oxide particle comprising adding to such composition a voided latex particle.
