A pressure and heat-sensitive composition comprising chromogen-containing pressure-rupturable microcapsules and heat-sensitive color developer useful for verification of document authenticity system when applied as a localized coating on documents, such as checks and prescriptions. Quickly striking the chromogenic composition with a fingernail or blunt object to generate pressure and heat in the coating produces a colored image by friction. The chromogenic composition possesses a fugitive characteristic, whereby the colored image gradually disappears and can be made to reappear when the chromogenic coating is again subjected to external pressure and heat. This feature can be used for repeated verification of the authenticity of the document.

Autocorrelation traces of laser pulses of short duration are produced by a method and apparatus that uses a rotating glass block to vary the path length on a time scale rapid enough to display the traces on a synchronized oscilloscope. Both paths of a split input beam of a laser pulse pass through the glass block. Rotation of the glass block changes the relative time of travel for light pulses along the two paths. The paths of the two beam arms pass through the block from different directions at a relative angle chosen so that the relative travel time difference is nearly linearly related to the angular position of the block during its rotation.Autocorrelation with rapid scanning through rotation of the block enables measurement of repetitive laser light pulses of very short duration, down to the order of one picosecond. An oscilloscope display of the autocorrelation traces allows the user to make laser adjustments while continuously monitoring the pulse correlation function so that the laser can be tuned in real time to produce ultra-short pulses.

A first transmitting device is used to transmit a first signal on a first carrier frequency to a relay device. The relay device receives the signal by demodulating the first carrier frequency. The transmitting and/or receiving devices are preferably voice terminals, such as a wireless telephones or data terminals, such as portable computers. The transmitting and/or receiving devices are optionally coupled to a communications network, such as a public switched telephone network or the Internet. The relay device is preferably a multiple beam satellite and/or a ground station covering several distinct geographical regions.

A method is disclosed for curing epoxy adhesive between the slider head and load/gimbal suspension assemblies of a disk drive access actuator employing a concentrated pulsed heat source rather than conventional, broadly applied heat source as employed in the past, such as oven heating or UV exposure. The laser source power is delivered via an optical fiber to the slider air-bearing surface (ABS) of the slider head assembly so that with this approach, the time for curing can be minimized and accurately controlled without causing damage to the assembly, and the overall curing step in the manufacturing process is reduced in time of application. Apparatus in the form of a fixture, such as an anvil element, provides a convenient gauge and support for alignment of the laser output beam with the slider ABS to which the heat for curing is to be applied as well as provide for its heat sinking.

The apparatus includes an aspirator, a liquid diluent conducting path, a liquid concentrate conducting path, and a liquid conducting outlet path. The aspirator has a first inlet port, a second inlet port, and an outlet port. The first inlet port is connected to the liquid diluent conducting path for receiving a stream of the liquid diluent and the second inlet port is connected to the liquid concentrate conducting path for receiving a stream of the liquid concentrate at atmospheric pressure. The liquid conducting outlet is connected to the outlet port for dispensing the use solution from the apparatus. The geometry of the aspirator nozzle and the fluid passageways in the dispenser are adapted to a high viscosity dilute product.

A method and apparatus for error recovery in various computer data storage devices that are associated with a host computer operating system includes an error recovery module that is coupled to each device driver in the host operating system. When one of the devices reports an error in the form of sense bytes to its associated device driver, the device driver sends the sense bytes and device type identification to the error recovery module. In turn, the error recovery module generates an action token based upon the sense bytes and device type, and then correlates the action token with error recovery actions. The device driver then executes the error recovery actions. Thus, a common error recovery module can be used in conjunction with a large variety of data storage devices.

A cover plate for an electrical receptacle outlet contains electrical circuits with flexible fingers which extend adjacent to the receptacle contacts such that the cover plate circuits are connected to the receptacle circuits by the prongs of a plug whenever a plug is inserted into the receptacle. The opposite end of the plate circuits extend into two cavities within the plate each of which can hold a matching module. Each module has flexible electrical contacts which press against each of the plate electrical circuits extensions to provide a connection from the receptacle circuit to the modules. The outer face of the cover plate adjacent to one of the modules has an opening to provide a path for either light or acoustic energy. The modules can contain any desired electrical circuits which can provide such functions as circuit protecting elements, pilot lights, alarm systems and detector systems as desired with no external wiring required.

A digital self-calibrating power factor controller for an AC induction motor. During start-up a first number corresponding to the actual phase angle between motor voltage and current is determined and compared with a second number corresponding to a desired delay in energizing the motor. The second number is varied until both numbers are approximately equal. A third number corresponding to a desired phase angle is determined and stored and the system switches from start-up to run. The first number corresponding to the actual phase angle is now compared with the third number corresponding to the desired phase angle. The second number corresponding to a desired delay is now varied with motor load so as to keep the actual phase angle equal to the desired phase angle.
