摘要: A method and apparatus for replacement of an existing non-frangible pipeline includes creating open access to opposite ends of an pipeline and threading a cable having a wedge mounted thereon through the pipeline so that the wedge is positioned proximate one of the ends of the pipeline. The wedge is pulled through the pipeline from the other end of the pipeline so that the wedge slits the pipeline to form a slit pipe in a borehole. The slit pipe is removed from the borehole and a rear end portion of the slit pipe is attached to a front end portion of the replacement pipe . As the slit pipe is pulled out of the borehole, the replacement pipe is drawn into the borehole. The boring apparatus has a braided cable and a boring head having an expander sleeve and a lengthwise bore of sufficient diameter so that the cable can pass therethrough. An insert is disposed inside a loosened, enlarged diameter portion of the braided cable so that braids of the cable are wound about the insert, forming a stop portion of the cable having a diameter insufficient to pass through the bore of the boring head, so that the boring head can be towed through the ground by the cable with stop portion of the cable in contact with a rear portion of the boring head. The boring heads have cutting edges in a variety of sizes and the boring heads can be interchangeably mounted on the cable and the stop. The pulling machine has a portable pulling device with an elongated stake configured for insertion into the ground, a winch including the pulling cable and a fixture for mounting the winch so that the winch can operate to exert a horizontal pulling force with the cable and is secured against movement when the lower end portion of the stake is inserted into the ground.

摘要: A joint is provided for coupling a pair of elongated members such as a sonde housing and starter rod end to end. Such a joint includes a projection extending in a lengthwise direction from one end of one of the elongated members and a socket in an end of the other of the elongated members, which socket is sized to slidingly receive the projection. A set of alignable transverse openings are provided in the projection and in a wall defining the socket, which openings are configured to receive a removable retainer for mechanically interlocking the projection in the socket. An interlock mechanism, such as a spline and groove connection, prevents relative rotation between the elongated member (e.g., housing and starter rod) when the projection is fully inserted into the socket. To maximize the strength of the joint, the interlock mechanism is preferably located outside of the projection and socket connection, most preferably as an annular formation of splines and grooves coaxial with the socket and projection and located either on the outside of the projection and the inside of the socket wall, or at a location outside of the socket and groove connection.

摘要: In a method for making a self-propelled impact boring tool, the tool body is formed by swaging a steel tube to form the tapered nose of the tool. This results in less wasted steel as compared to conventional machining of a solid steel bar to form the body, which is the largest single part of the tool. The tool body may then be fitted with a tool anvil of slightly different dimensions than the forming anvil used during swaging to provide an interference fit.

A sleeve has a non circular profile on an inner surface thereof whereby the sleeve can be slidably mounted on non circular exterior surfaces of the first and second members when such surfaces are brought into alignment by rotation of one member relative to the other in a manner effective to pass torque from one member to the other by means of the non circular surfaces. A fluid release passage includes a radial port that extends from the first longitudinal fluid supply passage to a clearance between the sleeve and the first member, which clearance communicates with a second clearance between the sleeve and the second member, which second clearance has a discharge opening.

摘要: A pipe bursting and pulling apparatus for use in replacing horizontal underground pipes including a cylindrical body with a tapered forward section including means for attaching one of a cable, rod, rope or chain, the cylindrical body including an annular inner wall defining a longitudinally extending, rearwardly opening recess, a shaft passing through the recess, a plurality of gripping jaws, at least one of the jaws including a pipe gripping tooth extending radially outward relative to a longitudinal axis of the shaft, a tapered expander connected to the shaft and configured to fit between the jaws, the expander forcing the jaws outward to clamp a replacement pipe inserted into the cylindrical body between the jaws and the inner wall when pulled by the shaft, a stop, the stop limiting the forward travel of the expander and preventing outward radial travel of the jaws after the tooth has been engaged in the wall of the replacement pipe whereby the tooth penetrates to a depth of no more than 35% of the thickness of the wall of the replacement pipe.

摘要: An impactor for use with a directional boring machine for replacement of underground pipes includes a bursting head having a rearwardly opening recess and a front end opening that communicates with the recess. An inlet pipe is connected at its front end to a distal end of the drill string and extends into the recess of the bursting head through the front end opening. A striker is mounted for sliding movement along the inlet pipe, and a distributing mechanism responsive to pressure fluid supplied through the drill string and inlet pipe causes the striker to reciprocate in the rearwardly opening recess of the head to deliver forward impacts against the bursting head. The striker and distributing mechanism are mounted in a tubular housing, and a pulling connection is provided by which the impactor can be pulled by the drill string while the striker is delivering impacts against the head in the same direction as a pulling force exerted by the drill string. The bursting head is preferably slidably mounted on the inlet pipe and moves forward relative to the inlet pipe and drill string in response to an impact of the striker against the bursting head. The impactor can be readily used with existing directional boring machines.

摘要: A method for installation of an underground pipe includes an initial step of boring a pilot hole through the ground at a predetermined grade angle by extending a drill string having a steerable boring bit mounted thereon through the ground. Upon reaching an end location for the pilot hole, the bit is removed from the drill string, and an expander having a diameter greater than the pilot hole is attached to the drill string, which expander is backed by an impact device such as a pneumatic impactor including a striker that delivers repeated impacts to a rearwardly facing surface of the expander, and by a pipe drawn along behind the expander. The expander is pulled back through the pilot hole at the grade angle while the impactor is operated to aid progress of the expander through the ground and pull the pipe into place behind the expander. Typically in this method the replacement pipe is coupled to a rear end of the expander and the boring bit has a sonde housing containing a sonde attached thereto to indicate to an operator the orientation of a steering face on the boring bit.

摘要: A drill bit suited for impact-assisted directional boring in rock includes a bit body having a frontwardly facing, circular main cutting surface having a number of main cutting teeth disposed thereon. A gage cutter extends radially outwardly from the main cutting surface, which gage cutter mounts at least one frontwardly facing gage cutting tooth thereon suitable for cutting in a circle during straight boring and over an angle defined by less than a full rotation of the bit in order to steer the bit. A heel on an outer side surface of the bit body at a position opposite to and behind the gage tooth provides a reaction surface for the gage cutter. The bit body and gage cutter have a nearly circular side profile along a front portion thereof such that a maximum radial clearance between the side profile and a side wall of a hole being drilled is not greater than about 10 percent of the radius of a circle cut by the gage tooth.

摘要: The invention provides an improved apparatus for directional boring and in particular an improved system for boring through hard and rocky substrates frequently encountered when boring under obstacles such as roadways. According to one aspect of the invention, a directional drilling apparatus includes a drilling head having a front face angled relative to the lengthwise axis of the tool and configured for steering the drilling apparatus, a housing having an internal chamber for mounting an electronic locating device therein rearwardly of the drilling head for transmitting a signal indicating the orientation of the angled face of the drilling head, and a joint at which the drilling head is removably mounted to the housing of the locating device. The joint includes a splined connection for passing torque from the sonde housing to the bit and an interlock mechanism which mechanically secures the bit to the sonde housing in a manner permitting the bit to be manually removed from the housing without undue difficulty.
