Abstract: A hand held, portable jump starter device includes a rechargeable battery with a plurality of battery cells connected in series, and a battery cell equalization circuit connected to the rechargeable battery. The battery cell equalization circuit includes an individual battery cell equalization circuit for each of the plurality of battery cells, with each of the individual battery cell equalization circuits configured to discharge a particular battery cell upon the particular battery cell reaching a cell voltage exceeding a pre-determined upper voltage threshold until the particular battery cell reaches a pre-determined lower voltage level below the upper voltage threshold, and where the individual battery cell equalization circuits are configured to charge lower voltage individual battery cells at a higher rate allowing lower voltage individual battery cells to catch up in voltage to an individual battery cell having a highest voltage.

Abstract: A dynamic battery charging method for use in a battery charger configured to charge a lead acid battery, including marking a time when battery charger switches from Constant Current (CC) phase to Constant voltage (CV) phase to establish CV Start Time; starting at CV Start Time; calculating Delta Current by subtracting current measurement at particular time interval from previous current measurement at an earlier time interval; terminating CV phase once Delta Current is less than or equal to a particular Delta Current current level OR once the battery charger operating current drops below a particular battery charger operating current; marking CV Finish Time; switching back to another CC phase once CV phase is terminated; and staying at another CC phase for a time period equal to the CV Finish Time minus CV start Time OR until lead acid battery reaches CV voltage plus an additional voltage amount to complete charging.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are a rechargeable battery jump starting device with a control switch (e.g. rotary control switch) and an optical position sensing switch system to determine a position of the control switch. The optical position sensing switch system includes an optical position sensor using optical coupling to insure an integrity of isolation on a 12V to 24V master switch to allow for a safe and effective operation, and configured so that a microcontroller unit reads a position on the master switch.
