Accessing method and an apparatus therefor in an optical disc apparatus having an acousto-optic light deflector for deflecting a light spot to a different address or different track on an optical disc are disclosed. An auto-focus signal is held at a constant level for a predetermined period when the acousto-optic light deflector deflects the light spot. Thus, an affect caused by coexistence of a plurality of acoustic frequencies in the acoustic-optic device is eliminated and fast light accessing is attained.

Information reproducing apparatus for producing information on an optical information recording medium includes a first light source which gives forth a beam of light of a wavelength .lambda..sub.1 and a second light source which gives forth a beam of light of a wavelength .lambda..sub.2 different from the wavelength .lambda..sub.1. An optical element selectively reflects the light of the wavelength .lambda..sub.1 and selectively transmits the light of the wavelength .lambda..sub.2. The first and second light sources, the optical element and the recording medium are positionally arranged so that the light beams from the first and second light sources may be projected on a predetermined position of the recording medium and a substantially identical position to the predetermined position through the optical element, respectively, and the arrangement of these elements is also such that the respective projected light beams may fall on the optical element after being reflected by the recording medium. First and second photodetectors detect light reflected from the optical element and light transmitted light through the same in accordance with the wavelength of the light beams falling on the optical element, respectively, and develop focusing and tracking control signals.

An optical information processing device comprises a semiconductor laser, and an optical system including an imaging lens having chromatic aberration for focusing laser light emitted by the semiconductor laser in the form of a spot on an information recording surface. The imaging lens serves for focusing the laser light at different positions along the optical axis for different wavelengths. The information processing device also includes an apparatus for producing relative displacements between the spot and the information recording surface, and an apparatus for varying the wavelength of the light emitted by the semiconductor laser with the device being characterized in that the imaging position of the spot is displaced along the optical axis depending on variations in wavelength of the light emitted by the semiconductor laser and the chromatic aberration of the imaging lens. The focusing control can be effected by driving the wavelength changing apparatus by using focal point detection signals. Further, it is possible to effect multigrade recording by driving the wavelength changing apparatus by multigrade information signals.

An optical information processor records predetermined information along a track on a recording medium through the irradiation of a light beam intensity-modulated in accordance with the predetermined information. A tracking signal obtained when the light beam traces the track, is compared with first and second preset values which define a predetermined range. When the tracking signal departs from the predetermined range, the intensity modulation of the light beam or the recording operation is stopped, thereby preventing data destruction which otherwise occurs due to the digression of the light beam from the track.

An optical tape apparatus having improved focus and tracking control. An optical head records, reproduces, or rewrites data on an optical tape by helically scanning the tape with a laser beam. A guide plate is disposed between the optical head and the tape to prevent the beam from becoming unfocused due to fluctuation of the tape cuased by an air film between the optical head and the tape. The optical head contains a semiconductor laser and an optical system exhibiting chromatic aberration for directing the laser beam onto the tape. The optical system includes a condenser lens for focusing the beam onto the tape. Fine focus control is achieved by changing the wavelength of the laser beam by directing part of the beam reflected from the tape back to the laser, thereby changing the focal point of the beam by virtue of the chromatic aberration of the optical system. Coarse focus control is achieved by mounting the condenser lens on a piezoelectric actuator which moves the consenser lens to focus the beam onto the tape. A recording head for recording timing marks and tracking signals on the tape is disposed in advance of the optical head. A reading head reads the timing marks and the optical head reads the tracking signals. The timing marks and tracking signals are used to control the operation of the apparatus such that the tape is transported with a constant speed and data on diagonal signal tracks on the tape is accurately recorded, reproduced, or rewritten.

A fast access high capacity data storage system and method are disclosed, the data storage system including a disk-based storage system employing a plurality of storage surfaces. Selected storage surfaces have a plurality of independently controlled data access heads in data communication therewith, and circuitry is provided for allowing concurrent data transfers through the plurality of data access heads. Performance is further improved by monitoring frequently accessed data records and transferring them to a copy recording surface or recording surfaces less frequently used, and by moving a data access head of the plurality of data access heads to other recording surfaces to decrease access bottlenecks. The storage system further includes circuitry for averaging at least one of record length data, transfer timing data, access timing data and address data.

An optical information recording system in which predetermined information is recorded by a first laser light beam on a recording medium along a guiding groove previously formed in the recording medium. Second and third laser light beams are projected onto the recording medium at positions deviated from the center of the guiding groove and preceding and succeeding to the first laser beam. A pattern in which no mutual interference of information to be recorded by the first laser beam is present is detected from an information signal which modulates the intensity of the first laser light beam. A difference is determined between the quantity of light reflected upon illumination of the recorded pattern by the second laser beam chronographically succeeding to the first laser beam and the quantity of light reflected upon illumination by the third laser beam. The position of the first laser beam is controlled on the basis of the thus determined difference for effecting an information tracking operation with improved accuracy.

A driving circuit for driving a semiconductor laser by a driving signal containing a pulse signal representing given information and superposed on a DC bias signal includes means for monitoring intensity of laser light emitted when the DC bias is applied, and means for monitoring the intensity of laser light emitted when the pulse signal is applied. The DC bias signal and the pulse signal are varied in dependence on the result of comparisons between the outputs of the monitoring means and respective predetermined reference values.
