A disposable absorbent article is provided which includes a substantially liquid-impermeable outer cover, a liquid permeable bodyside liner, an absorbent body located between the outer cover and the bodyside liner, and a pair of fasteners located on the laterally opposed side edges in one of the waist sections of the absorbent article. The outer cover can be configured to provide a substantially permanent deformation of at least about 10 percent when subjected to a tensile force of 100 gmf per inch (per 2.54 cm) of width according to the Material Elongation and Deformation Tensile Test set forth herein. The outer cover can further define a water vapor transmission rate of at least about 800 g/m2/24 hr. The permanent deformation of the outer cover in use can result in a longitudinal breathability gradient ratio between the outer cover in the waist section and the crotch or intermediate section of the article of at least about 1.25 according to the Product Deformation Test set forth herein.

A personal care article including a resiliently stretchable outer cover and a substantially nonelastomeric grasping panel attached to the front portion of the article. The outer cover is resiliently stretchable in at least the cross-direction to conform to the body of a wearer. The grasping panel has a sufficient stiffness to allow a user to properly fasten a fastening apparatus onto a landing zone. The stiffness of the grasping panel is sufficient to prevent roll-up or wrinkling of the grasping panels or the front portion of the personal care article. The stiffness of the grasping is not too large such that the comfort of the wearer is compromised. In one embodiment the absorbent structure is secured to the outer cover by extendible attachment elements and the bodyside liner is not secured to the outer cover. In another embodiment the bodyside liner is extensible in at least the cross-direction and secured about the periphery to the outer cover. The absorbent core is located between the bodyside liner and the outer cover. The fastener apparatus, when secured to a landing zone, overlies the absorbent core. In such a way the size of the absorbent core, and the amount of exudates capable of being contained therein, can be maximized. In another embodiment the fastener apparatus can have sufficient Gurley stiffness to prevent roll-up or wrinkling of the fastening apparatus or the rear portion of the personal care article.

In a second embodiment, a first panel is secured to a resiliently extensible second panel. A first zone of the second panel can have a pattern of embossments securing the second panel to the first panel. The embossments cause the first zone to have different stretch properties than a second zone of the second panel that is not embossed thereby to impart the set of stretch properties. In a third embodiment the second panel is pre-stretched to a predetermined degree of elongation before securement to the first panel. In use, the personal care article then has a first characteristic load/extension relationship until the article reaches the predetermined degree of elongation and a second load/extension relationship as the article is extended beyond the predetermined degree of elongation of the second panel.

Each expandable attachment section (90) is extendible at least outwardly or at least along the article width (24), and each expandable attachment section is configured to secure its correspondingly joined side edge region of the absorbent composite to the outward surface (56) of the first body panel (52).

The hinge channel has two end regions that are of a secondary thickness that is greater than the primary thickness. The increased thickness of the end regions resists the tearing that can occur in the lid after repeated opening and closing of the container.
