    Abstract: Apparatus for extracting liquid from a slurry containing fine solids and liquid comprising an endless screen formed of woven monofilaments of thermoplastic material so as to define a multiplicity of small openings extending between opposite sides thereof and a supporting structure for supporting the endless screen for movement through initial and intermediate operative run portions along an underside thereof in such a way as to present an upper operative side thereof for the accumulation of solids thereon by the passage of liquid through the openings thereof. The screen supporting structure comprises a multiplicity of fixed closely spaced parallel bars formed of material having favorable wear and coefficient of friction characteristics with respect to the thermoplastic material of the endless screen. Each of the parallel bars has (1) an upwardly facing rounded surface engageable with the underside of the endless screen so as to support the same for movement thereover and (2) side surfaces extending downwardly from the rounded surface. The spacing between adjacent side surfaces of adjacent bars defines slots of a width sufficient to allow the passage of enough liquid therethrough to form a solids layer and solids cake without allowing the underside of the initial and intermediate operative run portions to enter the slots appreciably below the upwardly facing rounded surfaces of engagement.

    Abstract: The filter according to the invention comprises an outer casing which is provided with an end cover having a connection to the engine lubrication circuit. The outer casing houses a first filter pack or element positioned to be passed through by the engine lubricating oil. A pressure relief valve, which allows the oil to bypass the first filter pack or element in the case of excessive pressure drop, is provided. The pressure relief valve cooperates with a piston element associated with an electrically conducting spring to establish electrical connection between an electrical contact and a part of the filter casing. A second filter pack or element is positioned to filter part of the oil which the pressure relief valve allows to pass when a high pressure drop in the oil flow through the first filter pack or element occurs.

    Abstract: To seal the top cover of a vacuum travelling web filter, the top cover is lowered, by gravity, with a depending rim fitting against an upstanding rim of a filtrate chamber pan; the contaminant chamber above the filter web is closed off, and supply of filtrate is inhibited. Upon starting of the pump, a vacuum will result within the two chambers, drawing the cover tightly against the filtrate pan and, when a sufficient vacuum has been reached indicative of sealing engagement, supply of contaminant can be opened to draw contaminant into the upper chamber. As the filter cake builds up, further change in pressure in the contaminant chamber will result which, when a predetermined operating pressure level is reached, causes interruption of supply of contaminated fluid, and opening of an air vent valve to dry the resulting filter cake. Sealing fluid can be introduced between the engaging rims of the cover and the filtrate holding pan, between which rims the filter web is interposed, for example by introducing filtered fluid into a groove between the rims, or by introducing an inert gas. Preferably, filtered fluid is used which will be drawn back to the pump upon pump operation. A bypass line of filtered fluid to the pump prevents dry running thereof.

    Abstract: This invention relates to improvements in or relating to vacuum belt filters. It relates further to suction boxes for such filters and to a method of operation of the filters. More particularly, the invention relates to the supporting of the belt of the filter about the suction box so as to minimize drag of the belt and to minimize friction between the belt and the suction box and still seal the suction box. This is accomplished by means of conduits that have deformable walls and are located along the edges of the suction boxes, fluid support cushions being formed in the conduits. This is also accomplished by controlling the fluid support cushion according to the drag on the suction box, the suction pressure in the suction box and the rate of flow of fluid into the conduits to form the support cushion.
