A process for high pressure embossing a single ply of paper and the paper produced thereby. The embossing process requires two rolls, a pattern roll 30 and an anvil roll 32. The rolls are loaded together at a pressure of at least 1000 psi at the nip. A single ply of paper is embossed in the nip. The embossments of the paper do not extend outwardly beyond the thickness of the paper to have any out-of-plane deformation. The embossments are typically glassined. The resulting paper has an aesthetically pleasing appearance, without undue loss of tensile strength from the embossing process.

Embossing a web between unmatched male and female embossing elements, wherein the sidewall slope of the female element is different than the sidewall slope of the male element, provides an embossed web having markedly improved embossing pattern definition and, in the case of roll products, greater roll bulk at equivalent roll firmness. The unmatched male and female embossing elements are preferably made by laser engraving rubber embossing rolls.

A method of preparing paper for filter bags, the method of the type comprising a step during which a non-woven paper is prepared comprising two superposed layers, namely a layer based on synthetic fibers and a layer of cellulose fibers, by a technique which is known per se, wherein the method includes a subsequent step of subjecting the non-woven paper to a calendering operation between a support structure and a heated cylinder having projections. The present invention also provides apparatus for implementing the method and products obtained in this manner.

A bulky, water-disintegratable cleaning article is formed of water-disintegratable paper impregnated with 100% to 500% by weight of an aqueous agent. The water-disintegratable paper is a substantially water dispersible fibrous sheet containing a water soluble or swellable binder. The water-disintegratable paper has a great number of protrusions and depressions formed by embossing and has a basis weight of 30 to 150 g/m2. The bulky, water-disintegratable cleaning article has a thickness T1 of 1.0 to 3.0 mm under a load of 0.3 kPa and a thickness T2 of at least 0.9 mm under a load of 1.0 kPa.

The present invention provides a die for impressing a material between the die and an anvil such as to apply a compressive force to the material. The die comprises a plurality of fields. Each of the fields includes at least two projections arranged to engage the material substantially simultaneously. In addition each of the fields is characterized by a total contact area over which the compressive force is applied. The total contact area of each field is defined by the projections of the respective field. The total contact area of each field is substantially uniform from one field to another such that the pressure applied by each individual field on the die is not more than double the pressure applied by any other individual field on the die.
