The present invention aims at providing an air conditioner used in an electric vehicle which can exert a sufficient cooling performance without enlarging the size of a motor for driving a compressor or supplying an excessive amount of driving current to the motor. The air conditioner of the invention is provided with a condenser fan for cooling a condenser and a motor for driving the condenser fan. A driving current Ap of a motor for driving a compressor is detected and compared with respect to reference currents A1 and A2 to select a driving current Vd0 (low voltage), Vd1 (moderate voltage) or Vd2 (high voltage) for controlling the rotation speed of the condenser motor. Since the increase in the load put on the compressor 2 caused by an increase in the temperature of the gas inside the condenser 4 can be suppressed by the cooling effect of the condenser 4 owing to the rotation of the condenser fan, a rotation speed of the compressor necessary to achieve the predetermined temperature can be obtained without providing a high driving current to the motor.

During a system heating mode, a pressure change rate ASP of the high pressure of the refrigerating cycle is calculated. When a pressure change rate .increment.SP rises above a predetermined value, a system electric expansion valve aperture is reduced. Accordingly, by calculation of the pressure change rate .increment.SP, it is possible to control the electric expansion valve in the above manner earlier than in prior art control schemes when there is a sudden rise in the high pressure.

The invention prevents the temperature of supplied air from being decreased by a defrosting operation when a vehicle is in operation. During the heating operation, it is judged whether the vehicle is in operation. When the vehicle is in operation, it is judged whether an external heat exchanger is frosted or not relying upon the external air temperature, temperature of the external heat exchanger (coolant) and the time of heating operation. When it is judged that frost is formed, the rotational speed of the compressor is increased to increase the ability to supplying the coolant, to maintain heating ability and to prevent the drop of temperature of the supplied air. When the frost is formed after the operation of the vehicle has been finished, it is judged whether the secondary batteries are being charged or not, i.e., whether the charging circuit of the secondary batteries is connected to the external power source for charging or not. When it has not been connected, the device waits until it is connected, and the defrosting operation is executed at a moment when the charging circuit is connected.

An automotive vehicle has an air compressor; a compressed tank for storing air compressed by the compressor; and a system for selectively releasing compressed air from the tank into the vehicle's passenger compartment to cool it. Preferably the vehicle includes a ventilation system and the compressed air is released into the ventilation system's air passageways. If the vehicle include a traditional air conditioning system using the evaporation of refrigerant to cool air, the release of compressed air can be used to provide cooling until a sensor indicates the traditional air conditioning system is capable of providing sufficient cooling. Preferably a radiator is located in the line between the air compressor and the compressed air tank to transfer heat away from the compressed air before it is stored in the tank. It is also preferred that controls in the vehicle's passenger compartment enable a passenger to control the release of the compressed air. Preferably the air compressor is turned on and off as a function of the pressure in the air tank, so the pressure in the tank tends to stay above a certain level. In some embodiments a plurality of compressed air tanks are provided with can separately have compressed air supplied to, or released from, them. Preferably the release of compressed air can be automatically stopped when a sensor detects that air temperature has dropped below a given level.
