The microprocessor controlled lamp flashing system includes a plurality of flash lamp assemblies for providing lighting effects in response to input control signals from a central processor. The control signals are provided in a data packet with intensity and address signals, and each flash lamp assembly includes a microprocessor which controls a flash control circuit for a flash lamp. Each microprocessor is connected to a preset address circuit which causes the microprocessor to respond to a unique address signal in the data packet and register the intensity signal associated with the unique address signal. The microprocessor controls cooldown of the flash lamp by registering intensity values and deactivating the flash control circuit for a determined cooldown time when the intensity values registered in a time period exceed a predetermined threshold value.

A variable color lighting can be realized at relatively low voltages with a simple and economical control circuit, and an increased light emission output can be attained to render the device utilizable as a main lighting source.

The radiation sensitive element is located in the depth of field of the focal plane, and the image of at least one portion of the source of radiation is focused by the refractor from the far field of the refractor onto the radiation sensitive element. A high voltage power source for supplying a DC high voltage to a discharge tube, can detect an abnormality when created at the discharge tube side and stop its output. The high voltage power source is provided with a detector circuit which detects when the DC high voltage is larger than a predetermined reference value and a control circuit which cuts off the output of the DC high voltage in response to the above detection. When an abnormality occurs at the discharge tube, for example, non-operation or unstable operation occurs, since a load becomes lighter than normal, and the DC high voltage to be supplied to the discharge tube becomes higher than normal and is detected by the detector circuit so that the control circuit responds to the detected high voltage and cuts off the output of the DC high voltage.
