    摘要: A plurality of workpieces are assembled into a stack. Two of the workpieces are machined on one surface at predetermined positions from the edges of the workpieces. The workpieces are stacked so that the machined surfaces of the workpieces face away from each other. Two workpieces are provided with a stop off material on one of their surfaces to prevent diffusion bonding at predetermined positions. The edges of the workpieces are welded together and a pipe is welded to the stack to interconnect with the stop off material to form a sealed assembly. The workpieces are diffusion bonded together. The integral structure formed is heated and opposite ends of the integral structure are twisted relatively to contour the integral structure to a predetermined shape. The integral structure is heated and the machined portions on the workpieces are isothermally forged and then the twisted integral structure is internally pressurized to superplastically form one workpiece to produce an article, e.g. a fan blade.

    摘要: A plurality of titanium sheets are assembled into a stack. At least one of the sheets is provided with a stop off material on one of its surfaces to prevent diffusion bonding at predetermined positions. The edges of the sheets are welded together and a pipe is welded to the stack to interconnect with the stop off material to form a sealed assembly. The assembly is heated and externally pressurized to diffusion bond the sheets together. The integral structure so formed is heated and opposite ends of the integral structure are twisted relatively to contour the integral structure to a predetermined shape. The integral structure is internally pressurized to break the adhesive bonds. The integral structure is heated and internally pressurized to superplastically form one sheet to produce an article, e.g. a fan blade.

    摘要: A method of manufacturing workpieces (6) and a device for effecting the same are related to the field of plastic metal working and can be used in the machine building industry. In order to improve the precision and strength of the workpieces (6) and to extend their service life, the workpiece blank is subdivided into heating zones, loading zones and cooling zones. The number of deforming steps is determined, the workpiece (6) is deformed under creeping conditions with stresses below the limit of elasticity, and, to avoid irreversible deformations, the stresses are relaxed. For this purpose, the thermal chamber (1) is provided with a multisectional housing (7) which has its sections (8) connected pivotally with each other where each section (8) has its own heater (2) and cooler (9), and within each of the zones a portion of the workpiece blank (6) is to be positioned which has the same geometrical and thermal physical properties throughout it.

    摘要: A forming die which includes a die cavity contains a forming blank composed of a metallic alloy having superplastic properties. The forming pressure in a pressurized space adjacent the forming blank is regulated by a pressure regulator. The volume of the die cavity is determined, as is the mass of gas initially contained in the die cavity at the beginning of the forming cycle. The total forming time is empirically determined. The average gas mass flow rate that will be exhausted from the die cavity is calculated by dividing the total mass of gas initially contained in the die cavity by the total forming time. A gas mass flow meter fluidly communicates with the die cavity and measures the mass flow rate of the gas displaced by the forming blank and exhausted from the die cavity. The gas mass flow meter is continuously monitored during the forming cycle or a gas mass flow rate signal is fed back to the pressure regulator. The forming pressure is regulated by the pressure regulator so that the gas mass flow rate exhausted from the die cavity approximates the predetermined average gas mass flow rate.

    摘要: An improved method of superplastic forming comprises the steps of selecting a relatively larger driver sheet and a relatively smaller part blank, both being made of Titanium, Titanium alloy or other metal capable of exhibiting superplasticity. A ceramic die is placed on a bottom wall of an upwardly opening ceramic forming chamber having sidewalls with upper edges. The ceramic chamber has an outer supporting steel jacket. The part blank is positioned over the die. The driver sheet is positioned over the part blank so that the peripheral edges of the driver sheet rest on the upper edges of the sidewalls of the forming chamber. A cover is provided for closing the chamber. It has a peripheral seal extending from an underside thereof. The cover and the chamber are clamped together in order to impinge the seal into a periphery of the driver sheet. The driver sheet and part blank are then heated to a predetermined temperature at which they exhibit superplasticity. Next a pressurized inert gas is introduced into an interior formed by the closed cover and chamber and thereafter released so that the driver sheet presses and forms the part blank around the die. The peripheral edges of the part blank are free to draw in during the forming to thereby avoid any undesired necking or thinning. The cover is lifted from the chamber and the formed driver sheet and part blank are removed.
