A conveyor system has a load support structure which enables loads to be moved along the conveyor. The load support structure has an input position at which loads can be placed into the conveyor system, an unload position at which loads can be removed from the conveyor system and a load storage area located between the input position and the unload position. The conveyor system also includes a plurality of sensors including an input sensor which senses when a load is at the input position, an unload sensor which senses when a load is at the unload position, and a filled sensor which determines when a pre-selected portion of the load structure has been filled with loads. A propulsion system moves loads along the load support structure. One such propulsion system includes a tram which reciprocates along the load support system. A control system responds to the sensors to cause the propulsion system to move one or more loads to the unload position whenever the unload position is empty. It also causes the propulsion system to move a load from the input position to the storage area when the unload position is full, until such time as the filled sensor determines the pre-selected portion of the conveyor support structure has been filled.

In one embodiment, a carcass-tracking apparatus housing is provided comprising an enclosure dimensioned to contain a transponder and having first and second oppositely-facing surface areas. The first surface area is positioned for mounting against a surface of a carcass-transporting device. The first and second surface areas are preferably different from one another. In another embodiment, the housing comprises an enclosure dimensioned to contain a transponder and having a plurality of surfaces which face in different directions. One of the surfaces is positioned for mounting on a carcass-transporting device. At least two other surfaces have openings therein which are joined with a transponder-receiving space. The openings are preferably sized and positioned to accommodate wireless communication with a transponder which can be received within the transponder-receiving space. An operator at a control station selects which mattress to discharge from the circulating system. A transfer system and method for moving an article between a conveyor and a workstation. The transfer system includes an elevator system having a lift device configured to engage the article carried by a conveyor and raise the article above the conveyor. The lift device is movable between a stand-by position with the lift device positioned for the movement of articles past the lift device along the conveyor, and an actuated position with the lift device holding the article above the conveyor. The transfer system also includes a support assembly for supporting the article vicinal a workstation. The support assembly including a shelf for retaining the article at the workstation and a displacement mechanism for moving the shelf between the conveyor and the lift device. The method includes moving a support to engage the article and lift the article above the conveyor, extending a load port shelf to the conveyor and inserting the shelf between the article and the conveyor. After the shelf is extended, the method includes moving the support to deposit the article onto the shelf, and after the step of moving the support, the method includes retracting the shelf to the load port.

In a system and method for automatically transporting and precisely positioning a work piece at a station for processing, a relatively low precision transport mechanism is utilized to transfer a chuck that holds the work piece to and from the processing station. Notwithstanding the use of the low precision transport mechanism, the chuck can be precisely positioned at the processing station by using a quasi-kinematic coupling. More specifically, the chuck is precisely located at the coupling by engaging pre-defined indexing notches at the coupling. The chuck is securely held against the coupling at the processing station by suction. The coupling may be supported on a precision stage, which is configured to further position the chuck with the work piece thereon with high precision for processing at the processing station. In another aspect of the invention, the chuck is configured to securely hold a smooth surface of the work piece by suction. In a further aspect of the invention, the transport mechanism may be configured to transfer the chuck between multiple processing stations. Each processing station has a similar quasi-kinetic coupling. The coupling may be supported on a single precision stage, which further positions the chuck with relatively high precision with respect to the processing apparatus.

Volume sharing between a plurality of conveyor lines increases conveyor system throughput, particularly when one or more of the conveyor lines experiences a high volume of article flow. The conveyor system includes a deflector assembly capable of deflecting articles away from the alignment region of the alignment conveyor and towards the overflow handler, and subsequently to an adjacent conveyor line, when the sortation conveyor is jammed or offline during the performance of maintenance.
