摘要: A method for maintenance of railroad wood ties is presented herein. The wood filler composition used in the method is applicable for filling holes or gaps in wood to stabilize wood structures. The composition comprises at least unintahite, also known as asphaltum or Gilsonite, and sand. The composition may further comprise a water repellant and a wood preservative. The composition is non-carcinogenic. The method comprises filling a hole with the dry composition described herein. The wood member may be a railroad tie and using an appropriate filling device, at least two holes, or at least four holes may be filled at one time.

摘要: A wooden structure incapable of holding a fastening device is restored by boring a hole of a desired size into the structure, cleaning the hole, and introducing a cellular plastic insert of a suitable size, so that the insert can hold a fastening device driven thereinto. The method is particularly useful for restoring a "spike-killed" railroad crosstie; the insert is composed of cellular high density polyethylene having average bulk density from about 15 to 50 pounds per cubic foot.

摘要: A railroad spike retainer is disclosed which may be driven into a railroad tie together with the spike it retains. The retainer exerts a retention force both against the spike to prevent its regression from the retainer and also against the tie to prevent the regression of the retainer itself from the tie.

摘要: Railway ties are restored while remaining in the railway bed and without removing the rails nor the bed plates which support the rails. After removing the spikes, the holes in the ties are bored-out by a drill passing smoothly through the spike holes in the bed plates. Metallic inserts, either a rod bent into a double U-shape or shaped into a helix are then placed in the bored-out holes and a filling of a hardening synthetic resin plastic is poured into the holes. The bed plates are raised somewhat from the ties and supported each by at least two spacing strips to form a narrow gap between the lower face of the bed plates and the top faces of the ties and then spikes are driven into the resin-filled holes, whereby the hardening synthetic resin plastic displaced by the spikes fills the gap between the bed plates and the railway ties.
