A swivel mount for a board binding includes a base mountable to an upper surface of a board, and a swivel plate rotatably mounted on the base for relative swivelling rotation of the swivel plate relative to the base between a ride position and forward-walking positions. A rotational resistance device cooperates between the swivel plate and the base for increasing rotational resistance above that of free-floating rotation but without locking of the swivel plate in a preset locking position when swivelling the swivel plate through the radial arc of the forward-walking positions. A ride position latch releasable locks the swivel plate in the ride position. An actuator releases the ride position latch. The applied force urges the swivel plate to swivel from said ride position to the forward-walking position.

A dual-locking rotational device with an escape mechanism for interface between a snowboard and the boot binding of a snowboarder's forward foot is disclosed. The present invention makes possible automatic positioning and repositioning of a snowboarder's forward foot boot binding from a transverse downhill position to a comfortable walking forward foot position and back again to the transverse downhill position. In particular, the present invention includes a swivel ring or disk positioned between the boot binding frame and the snowboard, and a locking mechanism which engages with the swivel ring or disk, to allow the swivel ring or disk, and thus the boot binding frame and the snowboarder's forward foot, to move between the transverse downhill position and the comfortable walking forward foot position. The present invention further includes a swivel disk retainer ring or disk for attaching the dual-locking rotating device to the top surface of the snowboard.

Apparatus for use with a gliding board that includes a shoe having an upper and a sole. A binding for mounting the shoe upon the board having an upwardly raised rear piece and attaching pieces securable to similar pieces on the binding. The upper further includes a frame having a stirrup that encircles the upper and securing mechanism for closing the frame about the shoe.

A snowboard binding includes a base plate for supporting a universal boot plate. A pair of locking slots are arranged on the sides of the universal boot plate. A fixed locking latch is attached to the base plate on one edge thereof for engaging one of the locking slots. A latch assembly is attached to the base plate on an opposite edge thereof. A slidable locking latch in the latch assembly is operable for engaging the other locking slot on the universal boot plate. The slidable locking latch is actuated by a cam member with an arcuate cam slot having a center eccentric to an axle of the cam member. The slidable locking latch is connected to the cam slot by a pin. When the cam member is rotated by a lever attached to the axle, the cam slot affects linear motion in the slidable locking latch, which is caused to extend or retract for respectively locking or releasing the universal boot plate. An alternative latch assembly includes a pivoting lever connected to a spring-loaded slidable locking latch by a connecting arm. The boot plate is attached by stepping down on the slidable locking latch, which is caused to retract and snap back into a locking position when the boot plate is fully seated. The boot plate is released by pressing down the lever to retract the slidable locking latch.

In accordance with the invention, a kinematically correct safety release binding is provided. Specifically, the invention provides a safety release binding for attachment of a foot of a user to a riding device; comprising a first attachment unit formed to be secured to the foot of the user, with said first attachment unit comprising a substantially plane surface throughout a central portion thereof, a support surface at each end thereof, and a first set of cohesive interlocking elements secured to the plane surface at the central portion thereof; a second attachment unit secured to the riding device and formed with substantially plane surface having a second set of cohesive interlocking elements secured thereon; and a pair of support pads disposed between the riding device and the support surfaces of the first attachment unit when the units are in operative position; said support pads being formed to provide the spacing between the first and second set of interlocking elements, whereby controlling forces are transferred between the foot of the user and the riding device and an excessive force causes disengagement of the interlocking elements of the attachment units and release of the user's foot from the riding device. In addition, a novel brake mechanism is provided in a preferred form of the invention.

A snowboard has two boot bindings in the form of plate bindings (11, 11'), arranged at a considerable angle to the longitudinal direction of the board. The release mechanisms of the two plate bindings (11, 11') are coupled together in such a way that during release of the one plate binding (11, 11') the release force for the other respective plate binding (11', 11) is at least substantially reduced.

A releasable binding assembly for a gliding board such as a monoski or snowboard which includes a pair of binding elements, each of which includes a mechanism for elastically retaining a shoe or boot and for releasing the shoe or boot upon the exertion of a biasing force exceeding a predetermined threshold. Each binding element includes a member which is movable against an elastic biasing force from an armed position in which a respective shoe or boot is retained on the board and a disarmed position in which the shoe or boot is permitted to be released. A linkage apparatus is provided so that upon release of one shoe or boot, the magnitude of the force which retains the other shoe or boot is reduced or eliminated to facilitate the release of the other shoe or boot.

A snowboard has two bindings for two boots (21) with the bindings being arranged at a substantial angle to the longitudinal axis (45). Each binding includes a board plate (17) secured to the board (11) and a boot plate (21) whic=h is fixedly connectable to the boot (31). Both plates (17, 21) are drawn into firm contact with one another by resilient tensioning devices (24, 25, 26, 27) which are substantially centrally arranged in the front and the rear regions. The resilience of the resilient tensioning devices is so dimensioned that with excessive loadings of the legs of the user the boot plate (21) can turn relative to the board plate (17) to the side, to the front and to the rear and also about a vertical axis (33).

A releasable foot binding for use in combination with a snowboard includes a socket component which is separably engageable with a foot-engaging component. The socket component is mounted on the snowboard and includes spaced-apart, upwardly-extending elongated side rails. Each side rail has an elongated flange portion extending laterally therefrom. The foot-engaging component is longitudinally engageable with the socket component and has a bottom which includes opposite side ribs positioned on the bottom to be slidably positionable below the flange portions of the socket component. A stop member limits movement of the foot-engaging component relative to the socket component beyond a fully-engaged position. A latch releasably secures the foot-engaging component against movement in the opposite longitudinal direction.

A releasable binding system for the sport of snowboarding includes releasable toe and heel binding clip means secured to forward and rear ends, respectively, of the ski board and simulated toe and heel members for releasable engagement with the releasable toe and heel binding clips along an axis parallel to the longitudinal axis of the ski board. The simulated toe and heel members are secured, releasably or permanently to the booted feet of a rider. In one preferred embodiment, the release of one ski boot binding is sensed and causes the substantially simultaneous release of the other ski boot binding. In a further embodiment, an attachment is provided for converting a boot to snowboarding has a sole plate adaptor releasably secured to the sole of the boot with a releasable binding plate member having simulated toe and heel members which is adjustably coupled to the releasable binding plate member so that the simulated toe and heel members project laterally relative to the sole of the boot. Flexible and resilient elements, such as elastomeric washers, permit or allow lateral movement of the user's leg to shift his weight and the direction of the force vector of the user's weight upon the ski board to provide a high degree of control.
