    Abstract: A method of repairing a drill pipe having first and second connector ends, each of the first and second connectors ends including a threaded portion and sealing portions, with a lathe having a chuck with longitudinally spaced first and second sets of jaws, the method comprising the steps of mounting the drill pipe in a lathe, gripping the first connector end of the drill pipe with each of the first and second sets of jaws, orienting the first connector end by manipulation of the first and second sets of jaws into a working position; and rotating the drilling pipe against a working tool to machine the threaded portion and sealing portion of the first connector end and produce a new threaded portion and sealing portion of the first connector end. A lathe with longitudinally spaced first and second sets of jaws is also disclosed. A device for positioning of subsequent workpieces without repeating alignment steps is also disclosed.

    Abstract: A power rotary tool has a drive spindle and a chuck device mounted on the end of the spindle. The chuck device has a body member with an axial bore through an end thereof that defines a female pilot section and a threaded longitudinal section adjacent and rearward of the female pilot section. A flat shoulder is defined on the body member rearward of the threaded longitudinal section. The drive spindle has a male pilot section at a forward end thereof and a threaded longitudinal section adjacent and rearward of the male pilot section.     Abstract: A quick setting and release actuator for cooperating with an axially movable chuck for holding a tubular workpiece in fixed position includes an anchor member (12) that is mounted in fixed relationship relative to a housing of a machine tool (20) and a thrust member (42) carried by a pivotally mounted carrier member (38) that pivots towards and away from the anchor member to drive the thrust member (42) into engagement with the end wall (44) of a multi-segment collet (26) to cause the collet to ride along its segment bearing surfaces (30) in a radial direction to engage the periphery of a workpiece (24) to be retained in the machine tool (20). Thrust member (42) may be pivotally mounted by a pivot connection (48) on the carrier (38) so that the thrust member will align itself with the end wall (44) of collet (26) even when the carrier is not precisely parallel with the collet end wall. In an alternative arrangement, rounded thrust pins may be used to transmit axial force to the collet (26) and this arrangement may include a thrust transmitting spacer (86). A lever (50) and cam (52) arrangement is provided to exert positive force on the carrier (38) at its terminal pivoted position by means of a thrust rod (54) cooperating with a thrust nut (58) connected to the thrust rod. A quick release pivot connection (40) may be provided to enable quick separation of the carrier (38) from its normal operating position adjacent the anchor member to thereby permit quick changing of the collet in the tool.

    Abstract: High speed machining of parts is greatly enhanced when the axial alignment between the machining tool, its tool holder assembly, and a tool driver assembly can be precisely maintained, preferably within about one ten thousandths of an inch, in order to achieve the utmost in machining precision in the parts being machined. In order to maintain this desired degree of alignment, the machining tool is mounted in an angularly adjustable holder assembly which mates with a complementary socket that forms a part of the tool driver assembly. The tool holder assembly can also be used to move the tool radially sideways in a rectilinear fashion relative to the tool driver assembly, if desired. Thread grooves are defined on the outer circumferential surface of the body member.
