Abstract:
A portable single-point beveling tool includes a tool housing, an associated tool drive mechanism and a base member which is rotatably supported on the housing for rotary motion about a rotation axis and arranged to be rotated by the tool drive mechanism. The base member has a portion which extends in a generally radial direction with respect to the rotation axis. The base member carries a cutting tool holder assembly, which includes a cutting tool holder. The base member also carries a cutting tool feed assembly, which is arranged to simultaneously drive the cutting tool holder assembly in a linear radial direction and the cutting tool holder in a linear axial direction with respect to the rotation axis. Rotary motion of the base member actuates the cutting tool feed assembly to drive the cutting tool holder assembly and the cutting tool holder.
Abstract:
A tool feed module for a portable lathe machine tool includes a tool block carrying a cutting tool driven by a feed screw incrementally advanced during a cutting procedure by an actuator arm contacting a striker device located on the tool housing. The actuator arm drives the feed screw through an actuator shaft and a one-way drive device permits the actuator arm to pivot in opposite directions while driving the feed screw in increments during pivotal motion in a single direction. To enable reverse rotation of the feed screw and withdrawal of the cutting tool to a starting position rapidly, the actuator shaft is connected to the one-way drive device through a releasable connection that permits rotation of the drive screw by the actuator shaft independently of the one-way drive device.
Abstract:
An adjustable roller bearing assembly adapted for use in a machine tool includes an elongated support bolt that rotatably supports a radially extending roller bearing, and a bushing adapted to be positioned within a bore of a support member and to which the bolt member can be threadably secured. The bushing includes an outer cylindrical portion adapted to be snugly received within a bore of a support member and a cylindrical through hole through which the bolt extends. The outer cylindrical surface of the bushing is eccentric with respect to a central longitudinal axis of the bushing so that the roller bearing and its associated support bolt can be radially adjusted relative to the support member by rotation of the bushing within the bore. The bushing is a one piece integrated sleeve, flange and threaded connector so that only the support bolt and bushing are needed to both clamp the bearing on the support and radially adjust the bearing position relative to the support.

A quick setting and release actuator for cooperating with an axially movable chuck for holding a tubular workpiece in fixed position includes an anchor member (12) that is mounted in fixed relationship relative to a housing of a machine tool (20) and a thrust member (42) carried by a pivotally mounted carrier member (38) that pivots towards and away from the anchor member to drive the thrust member (42) into engagement with the end wall (44) of a multi-segment collet (26) to cause the collet to ride along its segment bearing surfaces (30) in a radial direction to engage the periphery of a workpiece (24) to be retained in the machine tool (20). Thrust member (42) may be pivotally mounted by a pivot connection (48) on the carrier (38) so that the thrust member will align itself with the end wall (44) of collet (26) even when the carrier is not precisely parallel with the collet end wall. In an alternative arrangement, rounded thrust pins may be used to transmit axial force to the collet (26) and this arrangement may include a thrust transmitting spacer (86). A lever (50) and cam (52) arrangement is provided to exert positive force on the carrier (38) at its terminal pivoted position by means of a thrust rod (54) cooperating with a thrust nut (58) connected to the thrust rod. A quick release pivot connection (40) may be provided to enable quick separation of the carrier (38) from its normal operating position adjacent the anchor member to thereby permit quick changing of the collet in the tool.

Abstract:
A process for preparing tubular coupons formed of a pair of tube lengths butt-welded together with a full depth circumferential weld includes partially diagonally cutting the coupon sample through its transverse dimension so as to leave a thin bending strip along one wall of the coupon about which the coupon is bent for inspection of the internal surface of the weld area. Two procedures are described, both of which leave the interior surface of the weld exposed adjacent the diagonal cutting line through the coupon. The procedure facilitates bending open the cut coupon for internal inspection of the weld area. A jig fixture for holding the coupon during cutting by a band saw blade is described.
Abstract:
A portable machine tool for preparing pipe or other annular workpiece ends for welding includes a central mandrel shaft, a cutting head rotatably mounted on the mandrel shaft and a rotary drive connector on the cutting head arranged to concentrically fit within an annular drive head of a modular drive motor unit. The drive motor unit is restrained against torque reactive rotation by a torque reaction bar secured to the mandrel shaft so that relative rotation between the drive motor unit and the mandrel shaft is prevented. The tool is configured so that the annulus of the annular driving head of the drive motor unit can fit axially over the rearward portion of the tool for quick assembly and disassembly. The torque reaction bar is connected by a quick disconnect to the mandrel shaft to facilitate assembly and disassembly of the drive motor unit with a cutting head. A cutter element for use with the tool includes fastener openings symmetrically located so that the cutter can be located on a seat surface in four interchangeable orientations enabling interchangeable use of four cutting edges provided on the cutter.
Abstract:
A feed control for a tool bit carried by a headstock of a lathe includes a driving cam having a profiled lobe that permits automatic quick return of the tool bit following each cutting operation. The cam is driven in a forward feed direction by a cam actuator arm carried by the headstock of the lathe that is connected to the cam through a one-way drive clutch that converts oscillating motion of the cam actuator arm into unidirectional intermittent rotational motion of the cam. A control device is provided to adjust the incremental feed rate of the tool bit by controlling the motion of the cam actuator arm and the staring position of the tool bit between cutting cycles is adjustable.
Abstract:
A portable machine tool for removing stub ends of heat exchange tubes from a heat exchanger header or other plate structure and preparing the tube opening in the header for butt-welding a new tube at the opening. The tool includes a mandrel that may be locked within the tube opening and a plurality of stabilizing legs extending between the mandrel and the header for stabilizing the mandrel during machine tool operation. A cutting head is mounted concentrically on the mandrel and is advanced into engagement with the stub end of a heat exchange tube and it's respective opening to remove the stub end and prepare the opening for welding the new tube thereon.
